National Grid is hiring a Lead Supervisor (Internal and External), Capital Delivery Supervision for Massachusetts. This is a Onsite Role - Must live within a commutable distance to Worcster, MA. 

Job Purpose

The function of the Construction Lead will be a duel focus on planning/execution development and supervisory oversite of large scale Transmission projects in National Grids N.E. Territory. Activities during the planning phase to include but not limited to writing outage plans for specific steps for replacement or installation of new or old Electrical Transmission Line equipment, sequencing of construction work that fits the specific project needs and work alongside Engineering to support the design of a project. Responsible for overseeing the construction planning of multiple projects and communication with project team leaders and department leaders about project details. The Construction Manager will follow the project through construction performing the task as a lead supervisor by providing proactive leadership and direction to the Transmission construction contracted and/or internal workforce to ensure that high standards of safety, quality, security and environmental compliance are consistently maintained.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop a detailed construction plan that involves planned outages (shutdowns), construction phases, construction steps, material, and equipment requirements, lay down areas, and overall time schedule with final ready for load dates that align with the project plan.
  • Must have ability to review Transmission Line design drawings and provide comments to engineering. Must be able to develop detailed construction sequence based on the design criteria. Must be able to provide construction input to the design team in order to identify potential construction issues such as the need for temporary facilities.
  • Provide input to engineering in order to identify potential areas to implement safety by design. Challenge existing ways of working and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies within assigned area.
  • Attend site meetings and participate with project team to evaluate different engineering solutions, construction strategies, and project delivery strategies in order to deliver the project safely and efficiently.
  • Understand collective bargaining agreements that could impact work plan delivery.
  • Develop work plans that are aligned with safety standards, policies and processes in order to ensure that the execution of the work plans will promote a safe working environment and minimize risk for all staff. Collaborate with other groups to ensure system reliability, safety, and efficiency is demonstrated during large scale projects.
  • Work in partnership with project managers, materials management, control centers, project estimators, resource planners, legal, real estate and permitting groups for any challenges that are presented in project execution along rights of ways and company owned property where new or existing facilities could be developed.
  • Review health and safety plans for each specific project, inclusive of Project Hazard Assessment (PHA) for high hazard work practices.
  • Demonstrate safety leadership during all site meetings and project discussions. Lead by example and ensure safety is incorporated into all aspects of the project and the daily job.
  • Lead, motivate and develop Sr. Supervisors, prioritize work, promote safe working practices and allocate resources to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations and customer/business objectives
  • Oversee the operational workload of the team to ensure allocated resources are fully utilized to deliver against agreed upon work plans and execute work activities
  • Ensure supervised teams comply with safety standards, policies and processes to ensure a safe working environment and minimize risk for all staff
  • Working closely with workforce to ensure development of a complete Work Proposal, including construction work plan, detailed schedule, Safety & Health Plan, and outage plan
  • Assuring that assigned personnel are properly directed, trained, licensed, and evaluated within Company guidelines and procedures
  • Drive Internal and/or Contractor performance through monitoring construction project status, assessing schedule performance, reassigning resources, and monitoring environmental concerns to ensure efficient project delivery and timely internal stakeholder support

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Engineering Technology or 5-10+ years of equivalent experience in the utility construction sector.
  • Broad knowledge of OH Transmission Line construction with 5-10+ years of field and labor-force Supervision experience.
  • Experience in Transmission construction methods, cost control, safety, environmental, quality and service, and performance. Demonstrated knowledge and application of Safety and Environmental rules.
  • Ability to assess potential conflicts by reviewing construction drawings and provide solutions to the project team.
  • Must be able to work in a cross functional role to develop a construction plan with inputs from the various operations groups, project management, engineering, and dispatch control room.
  • Analytical Thinking: Sees relationships between work plans, safety issues, constructability, and spend vs. efficiency reports identifying several likely causes or consequences of a situation.
  • Strong demonstrated skills in the following areas: Written and oral communications, including developing and executing communications through various mediums including verbal presentations, emails, PowerPoint, conference calls, and other appropriate methods
  • Organization and management of multiple tasks / priorities to deliver high results
  • Displays commitment to safe and productive work environment through consistent actions, beliefs and personal conduct.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, OSHA, local, and applicable environmental rules and regulations.
  • The ability to understand construction field issues, prints specification sheets, schematics, one line diagrams, and instructional information to construct, maintain, and troubleshoot electric transmission and distribution lines, and substation equipment.
  • A thorough understanding of electrical principles and the hazards associated with electrical transmission work.
  • Experience in transmission “Live Line” methods using both hot stick and bare hand techniques.

Salary - $139,000 - $163,000
