National Grid is hiring a number of QA Engineers on a permanent basis. The location for this role can be based in Warwick, Bristol, Castle Donnington or possibly other UK Wide locations - We offer a hybrid working model.

About The Role

 

Reporting to the Head of QA Engineering, this is a high-impact opportunity for a passionate QA Engineer to shape the future of software quality across cloud and on-premise platforms. You’ll design and manage testing strategies, tools, and systems that support fast-moving development teams and deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions.

 

You’ll lead the charge on automation, resilience, and performance—minimising defects and driving operational excellence across diverse environments. Your work will be critical in ensuring our platforms meet the highest standards of reliability, efficiency, and compliance.

 

As a subject matter expert, you’ll foster collaboration, mentor peers, and champion Agile principles—helping teams embrace a culture of adaptability and continuous improvement. You’ll also have the opportunity to deputise for the Head of QA Engineering and play a key role in shaping a positive, high-performance culture across Technology and the wider business.

What You'll Do

 

  • Design and deploy scalable, high-performance software aligned with long-term business goals
  • Monitor and enhance performance of distributed platforms for uptime and efficiency
  • Develop automation for configuration, provisioning, and deployment to streamline operations
  • Conduct security testing and implement protocols to ensure compliance and data integrity
  • Lead resolution of outages and performance issues with root cause analysis and prevention
  • Collaborate with engineering, DevOps, and IT teams to integrate and optimise solutions
  • Build and maintain automated test cases for microservices-based products
  • Analyse system capacity and plan for future scalability
  • Document system configurations and troubleshooting procedures for knowledge sharing
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and integrate relevant advancements into infrastructure
  • Support third-party development partners to meet design and quality standards
  • Ensure design goals—performance, modularity, reliability, maintainability, reusability, accessibility—are met
  • Identify and track defects early using issue management tools
  • Conduct performance testing (load, stress, scalability) to validate system resilience
  • Own personal development and manage business risks in line with company frameworks
  • Champion Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) and promote Agile principles across teams
  • Deputise for the Head of Product Management and take on additional duties as required

About You

 

  • Strong experience with cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Skilled in containerisation (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes) and orchestration tools
  • Hands-on with automation tools and CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficient in Python and scripting for automation and testing
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, networking, storage, and compute management
  • Experienced in test-driven and behaviour-driven development (TDD/BDD)
  • Familiar with performance testing tools (e.g. Locust) and API testing (e.g. Postman)
  • Proficient in monitoring, logging, and test frameworks
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, complex environments
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Familiar with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices

What You'll Get

 

A competitive salary between £55,000 - £65,000  dependent on capability

 

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
