National Grid is hiring for a Performance, Risk and Compliance Lead  - This position is based in our Warwick office. Hybrid/Flexible Working model.

Job Purpose

 

The Performance, Risk and Compliance Lead will play a critical role in ensuring Operations delivers its objectives safely and efficiently, in line with National Grid’s strategic priorities and regulatory obligations. You will work in partnership with relevant departments across ET and the regional substation teams to embed a consistent, high-quality, and data-driven approach to performance, risk and compliance assurance. You will raise visibility of performance measures that require attention, develop and manage a strategic risk register for the department, and collaborate with the Policy team and SHEC to ensure we meet our legal obligations and maintain our ISO certifications. The Operations (Substations & Cables) department comprises six regional teams, as well as capital development and commissioning teams. The department employs around 1,300 people, with colleagues spanning from Level 3 to Band C, both field and office based, so you will tailor your approach depending on the task and audience. 

What you'll do

 

  • Lead a consistent approach to KPIs across regional teams; analyse and interpret performance data to identify trends, gaps and improvement opportunities. Act as the lead interface between Operations and the AO Performance Manager, ensuring KPIs are built on high-quality data, meet departmental needs, and are well understood.
  • Collaborate with the Operations leadership team, Transformation PMO, and AO Performance Manager to track key transformation metrics and ensure the realised benefits of change programmes.
  • Drive engagement and accountability by raising the profile of KPIs requiring increased focus or escalation.
  • Support the coordination and preparation for internal and external audits, ensuring evidence and documentation are robust and up to date.
  • Lead the development and management of the Operations risk register, ensuring risks are clearly articulated, assessed and mitigated. Work with central risk and assurance teams to align local risk practices with corporate frameworks.
  • In collaboration with SHEC, Risk & Assurance, and regional Operations teams, support continuous improvement of governance, risk management and compliance within Operations, promoting transparency and accountability in risk management across all areas.
  • Provide regular reporting and insights to the Operations Director and senior leadership team to support informed decision-making.
  • Facilitate risk workshops and reviews with operational managers and teams to identify emerging risks and ensure proactive management.

About you

 

  • Practical understanding of operational processes in large or complex organisations.
  • Proven experience building and managing risk registers and implementing mitigation plans.
  • Experience supporting ISO management systems and coordinating certification/audit activities, including re‑certification.
    • Knowledge of (9001, 14001, 45001) is a bonus.
  • Strong data literacy: comfortable working with large datasets, analysing performance and turning analysis into clear, prioritised actions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills with a track record of driving accountability across diverse and geographically dispersed teams.
  • Organised self‑starter with attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Experience connecting operational teams, management, and central functions to ensure data, actions, and escalations are effectively coordinated and communicated.

What you'll get

 

A competitive salary between £48,000 - £57,000 – dependent on capability
