National Grid is hiring a PMO Manager for our Electricity Transmission (NGET) team. This role is designated as hybrid, with an expectation of one or two days per month in one of our offices. Requirements may vary based on business needs and company policy. This is a 12 month secondment opportunity.
About the Role
To provide a holistic view of the performance, planning and financial overview from the Portfolio Management Office ensuring consistency in approach to selecting, planning, running, and closing product and platform changes within the portfolio against the key measures which will be time, cost and quality.
The Portfolio Management Office will be the conduit for status reporting, performance analysis and information for senior management with a key objective of allowing senior leadership to make informed decisions based on the information and insight. As well as leading the delivery of reporting, you will help with the holistic view on risk management and resourcing in NGET CIO Function, ensuring that there are the relevant controls in place to keep these areas well managed. You will also be responsible for developing organisational goals and plans, monitor/evaluate data to assure delivery of goals and objectives to ensure delivery. We are looking for an individual who is comfortable working with senior stakeholders to understand their requirements but with the ability to challenge and maintain alignment to the core PMO service catalogues and PMO governance standards
What You'll Do
Portfolio Management (5) - Developing and applying a management framework to define and deliver a portfolio of programmes, projects and/or ongoing services.
- Ensures that programme/project leads and/or service owners adhere to the agreed portfolio management approach and timetable.
- Explains what information is needed and ensures they provide this information to agreed targets of timelines and accuracy.
- Produces reports as appropriate for portfolio governance, including making recommendations for changes to the portfolio
Quality Assurance (5) - Assuring, through ongoing and periodic assessments and reviews, that the organisation’s quality objectives are being met.
• Plans, organises and conducts formal reviews and assessments of complex domains areas, cross-functional areas, and across the supply chain.
• Evaluates, appraises and identifies non-compliances with organisational standards and determines the underlying reasons for non-compliance.
• Prepares and reports on assessment findings and associated risks. Ensures that appropriate owners for corrective actions are identified. Identifies opportunities to improve organisational control mechanisms.
• Oversees the assurance activities of others, providing advice and expertise to support assurance activity.
Change Control (5) - Assessing risks associated with proposed changes and ensuring changes to products, services or systems are controlled and coordinated.
- Leads the assessment, analysis, development, documentation and implementation of changes.
- Manages investigative work to enable feasibility assessments.
- Collaborates with stakeholders and specialists to get the information required for feasibility assessment.
- Advises on the selection of feasibility assessment approaches and techniques relevant to the business situation and options
Portfolio, programme and project support (5) - Providing support and guidance on portfolio, programme and project management processes, procedures, tools and techniques.
• Takes responsibility for the provision of portfolio, programme and project support.
• Advises on the available standards, procedures, methods, tools and techniques.
• Evaluates project and/or programme performance and recommends changes where necessary.
• Contributes to reviews and audits of project and programme management to ensure conformance to standards.
Resourcing (5) - Acquiring, deploying and onboarding resources.
- Plans and manages the acquisition and deployment of resources to meet specific needs and ongoing demand.
- Defines and manages the implementation of resourcing processes and tools. Advises on available options and customises resourcing approach to meet requirements. Adheres to standards, statutory or external regulations and codes of practice and ensures compliance.
- Engages with external parties in support of resourcing plans.
- Measures effectiveness of resourcing processes and implements improvements.
Risk Management (5) - Planning and implementing organisation-wide processes and procedures for the management of risk to the success or integrity of the enterprise
- Carries out risk management activities within a specific function, technical area or project of medium complexity.
- Identifies risks and vulnerabilities, assesses their impact and probability, develops mitigation strategies and reports to the business.
- Involves specialists and domain experts as necessary
About You
- Experience of managing a PMO office, preferred experience in a technology function.
- Can successfully operate at Executive level, forming strong relationships and engagement as needed across all levels of the Business Entity
- A good understanding of the industry within which they are operating
- Experience of working within a heavily matrixed organisation, with the ability to drive for results
- Experience of IT strategic, investment and programme planning ensuring alignment with business strategy and priorities
- Strong background in process and performance improvement, using project data to enable informed decision making
- Experience of matrix management of resources.
- A good understanding of financial management, benefits management and realisation linked to business results
- A good understanding of agile ways of working and product delivery model
- Strong critical reasoning and problem solving.
- Skilled at setting up career development plans to attract and retain permanent resources in a specialised environment, building technical capability that both supports the current demand of the team and creates career progression through the PMO structure for longer term stability.

What You'll Get
