National Grid is hiring for five positions:

 

 4 x Lead Transmission Engineer – Primary (HVDC) e.g. HV Plant, Converter Valve

 

1 x Lead Transmission Engineer - Secondary (HVDC) e.g. Protection and Control, Valve cooling

 

These positions can be based from our Warwick, Bristol, West Weybridge or Leeds offices (however we can be open to other locations across the country.) Hybrid Working model.

 

COVER LETTER REQUIRED FOR THIS ROLE

Job Purpose

 

As the Lead Transmission Engineer for HVDC, your role is to assure the project design, delivery and recovery process for scheme types within HVDC. Ensuring for the area of HVDC engineering expertise, that the business has optimal scope definition and solutions, for each individual project/incident investigation. To ensure the application of the highest standards of Safety, Quality, Sustainability and Resilience with minimum impact on Environment are considered in the design. 

 

Your expertise in HVDC Asset knowledge, including, but not limited to converters, valves, HVDC protection and control and other HVDC related electrical assets, will be vital in driving the success of our HVDC initiatives.

What you'll do

 

  • Provide design assurance on a risk based approach - via stage by stage confirmation during HVDC project lifecycle – that projects can proceed to the next stage and to eventual commercial service, and provide design, obsolescence and commissioning advice / assurance as appropriate 
  • Discharge the role of Design Assurance (on strategic and complex projects) through the provision of cross-technology leadership and coordination over several functions and in line with National Grid procedural requirements 
  • Where appropriate, discharge the role of Advanced Commissioning Officer (e.g. Approve the Factory Test Results on behalf of employer) 
  • Where required, discharge the role of Relay Settings Assurance Engineer 
  • Technically manage external contracts, contractor and stakeholder relationships and direct framework consultants, to drive consistency and ‘value engineering’, working in partnership with wider NG teams as appropriate 
  • Act as the technical lead and ‘NG Principal Designer Representative’ where appropriate. To provide detailed engineering support for HVDC to ensure cost effective and appropriate option selection for project detailed design and delivery, including coordination and resolution of technical issues from internal and external stakeholders 
  • Support the development of standardised solutions for asset interventions 
  • Provide technical support and work in partnership with the ET Type Registration and Innovation processes and Global Procurement specialists for tender and support contract activities. 
  • Author, develop, advise on, implement and maintain Business Procedures and Technical Specifications as appropriate and ensure all lessons learned and best practice are incorporated as required 
  • Lead and coordinate technical investigations within HVDC and progress to completion subsequent engineering investigations
  • Undertake audit and incident analysis in support of health of engineering and commissioning reviews and recommend performance improvements and providing assurance on the status of transmission engineering. 
  • Work seamlessly with Development and Delivery teams to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the Capital Programme, whilst ensuring the execution of National Grid governance requirements. 
  • Provide oversight, challenge, mentoring and advice to more junior team members as applicable and support them in delivering their accountabilities and objectives.  

About you

 

Interpersonal, Supervisory or Management: 

  • Ability to work under challenging deadlines.
  • Proven ability to develop working relationships quickly and effectively, and communicate clearly and diplomatically.
  • Proven experience of communication with, and influencing, internal and external stakeholders (e.g., regulator, managers).

 

Technical or Specialist:

  • Significant experience in HVDC projects specialising in Primary and/or Secondary systems, including proficient understanding of security, cyber and procedural requirements. For example, experience in HVDC Converter Valves and cooling systems, HVDC Control and Protection. 
  • Advanced knowledge of design, extension and lifetime management of assets associated with HVDC. 
  • Good understanding of ET Operations Policy and Procedure. 
  • Detailed knowledge of Safety Rules and National Safety Instructions 
  • Knowledge and appropriate authorisation in line with engineering assurance procedures (BP141), and thorough understanding of commissioning (BP106). 
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and knowledge of successful project delivery 
  • Experienced in effective communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to multi-disciplined teams / audiences 
  • Knowledge of negotiation/contract management and influencing at all levels 
  • Experienced in building and maintaining relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders

  • A competitive salary around £66,000 - £78,000 – dependent on competency-based evaluation.
