National Grid is hiring a Data Capability Director on a permanent basis. The location for this role can be based in Warwick or London - We offer a hybrid working model.

About The Role

 

We’re looking for a dynamic and visionary leader to shape the future of our data profession. As Director of Data Capability, you’ll drive the development and adoption of a cutting-edge skills framework and learning offer that spans both IT&D and the wider business — empowering our people and strengthening our data community.

 

You’ll work across complex stakeholder landscapes, aligning with major initiatives like SFIA, operating model redesign, and talent strategy. From building global communities and champion networks to improving how we attract, retain, and grow data talent — this is your chance to make a lasting impact.

What You'll Do

 

  • Champion and clearly articulate the case for change to elevate data capability across National Grid
  • Inspire and engage stakeholders and SMRs to co-create and align behind a bold, shared vision
  • Design a future-ready career framework with input from across the business, blending best practice with National Grid’s unique context
  • Lead the sign-off process, ensuring alignment and buy-in at every level
  • Launch an accessible, user-friendly portal to bring the framework to life
  • Drive adoption through impactful change management, communications, and engagement strategies
  • Partner with HR and Reward to embed the framework into broader transformation efforts
  • Align with ongoing operating model initiatives across IT&D and the business
  • Build and lead vibrant communities, leadership forums, and champion networks to connect and empower data professionals

About You

 

  • Track record of successful development and implementing data and IT&D capability framework in similar sized environment
  • Outstanding stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence upwards without any reporting lines (e.g. from IT&D to business)
  • Experience of working in matrix structures and complex, international environments
  • Track record of engaging and creating global communities and leadership teams
  • Project management experience
  • Commercial acumen, with the ability to quantify and track benefits
  • Extensive change management and transformation experience
  • Recognised change management qualification such as Prosci
  • Conversant in Digital and Data concepts

Competitive Salary: circa £71,000 – £88,000 per annum (dependent on location, capability, and experience)

We are also offering hybrid /flexible working. Base location for this role will be NG House, Warwick or the Strand, London.
