Unleash your superpower and bring energy to life.
National Grid is hiring HVDC and FACTS System Design/Studies Engineers for our Network Design team. This is a hybrid role based at our head office in Warwick.
About the role
At National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), we're delivering one of the UK's largest electricity network transformation programmes, investing billions to modernise the grid and connect unprecedented levels of renewable energy, helping drive a secure, affordable and net zero energy future.
To support this transformation, we're growing our specialist HVDC and FACTS engineering capability and are recruiting for two exciting opportunities:
- HVDC & FACTS System Studies Engineer
- HVDC & FACTS System Design Engineer
These roles offer the chance to work at the forefront of power system innovation, applying cutting-edge technologies to solve some of the industry's most complex engineering challenges. You'll play a key role in the design and development of nationally significant projects that will help reshape Great Britain's electricity network for generations to come.
Working alongside leading experts across the industry, you'll influence major investment decisions, contribute to pioneering network solutions, and help deliver the infrastructure needed to achieve the UK's net zero ambitions.
What you'll do
In these roles you will provide technical leadership across some of the UK's most significant energy infrastructure projects, supporting the development and delivery of HVDC and FACTS schemes from concept through to energisation. Working at the forefront of power system innovation, you will lead complex studies and design activities that enable the integration of renewable generation and enhance the capability of Great Britain's transmission network.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and reviewing advanced power system studies, including load flow, fault level, EMT, dynamic performance, harmonic, control interaction, SSTI and Grid Code compliance assessments.
- Developing, validating and assessing HVDC and FACTS models and system designs using industry-leading tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSCAD.
- Providing technical leadership and specialist expertise throughout the project lifecycle, influencing design decisions and ensuring robust system performance.
- Supporting the development of technical specifications, supplier engagement activities and tender evaluations for complex transmission projects.
- Collaborating with manufacturers, consultants and internal stakeholders to develop innovative, compliant and technically robust solutions that support the transition to a net zero energy system.
What you'll need
HVDC and FACTS System Design Engineer:
- Experienced in calculating, assessing, and interpreting Short Circuit Levels (SCL) under a range of network operating conditions.
- Strong understanding of the impact of network topology, outages, contingencies, generation dispatch, and network developments on fault levels, system strength, and overall network performance.
- Experience in performing and interpreting Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV), Temporary Overvoltage (TOV), and insulation coordination studies.
- Experience conducting Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies, including switching transient analysis for HVDC and FACTS schemes.
- Good understanding of HVDC and FACTS substation design, interfaces, equipment specifications, and rating requirements.
- Knowledge of harmonic filter design and reactive power compensation principles for HVDC and FACTS installations.
- Strong understanding of grid code compliance requirements and power system performance standards.
What you'll need
HVDC and FACTS System Studies Engineer
- Good understanding of HVDC and FACTS control systems and their impact on dynamic performance.
- Proven experience in PSCAD and DIgSILENT PowerFactory model development and simulation studies for HVDC and FACTS devices.
- Strong understanding of Grid Forming (GFM) and Grid Following (GFL) converter control concepts and their application in modern power systems.
- Experience in performing and/or reviewing Dynamic Performance Studies (DPS), Control Interaction Studies, and Sub-Synchronous Torsional Interaction (SSTI) studies for HVDC and FACTS projects.
- Good understanding of relevant technical specifications, industry standards, and grid codes that define the dynamic performance requirements for HVDC and FACTS devices.
- Ability to assess system performance, identify control related risks, and recommend mitigation measures to ensure compliance with grid code requirements.
- Strong analytical and technical reporting skills, with the ability to communicate study findings and recommendations effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
