HVDC Converter Station Engineer

Business Unit:  National Grid Ventures
Requisition Number:  12158

About the role

Are you an ambitious electrical engineer looking to work on some of the most innovative energy infrastructure projects in Europe?

At National Grid Ventures (NGV), we're delivering the next generation of interconnectors and offshore hybrid assets that will help connect renewable energy, strengthen energy security and support the transition to net zero. As an HVDC Converter Station Engineer, you'll play a key role in shaping the technology at the heart of these projects, including LionLink – a pioneering development connecting the UK to offshore wind generation in the Netherlands and onward to the Dutch onshore grid.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop specialist expertise in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology while working alongside industry-leading engineers, international partners and global technology suppliers.

What you'll do

As a Converter Station Engineer, you'll support the design, development and delivery of HVDC converter station systems across major strategic projects. You'll gain exposure to real engineering challenges and play a key part in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the development and assurance of converter station requirements from concept through to delivery.
  • Providing technical support during the Development Consent Order (DCO) process, including the preparation of responses to technical queries.
  • Working with OEMs, consultants and project partners to demonstrate compliance with GB Grid Code requirements, National Grid standards and project specifications.
  • Reviewing designs, studies, reports and technical proposals, helping to resolve engineering challenges throughout project delivery.
  • Supporting critical interfaces across converter technology, grid connection, cable, civil, control and wider project teams.
  • Participating in design reviews, factory acceptance testing, site testing and commissioning activities.
  • Supporting the integration of protection and control systems, communications, auxiliary systems and third-party interfaces.
  • Contributing technical expertise to tender evaluations and future technology selections.

What you'll need

We're looking for engineers who are curious, collaborative and excited by the opportunity to develop expertise in a specialist area that is central to the energy transition.

You'll ideally have:

  • A degree, or equivalent experience, in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, HVDC, Control Systems, Substations or a related discipline.
  • A genuine interest in power transmission, renewable energy integration or major infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of HVDC technology, converter stations, substations, electrical systems or protection and control systems (desirable but not essential).
  • The ability to analyse technical information and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to learning.
  • A collaborative mindset and the confidence to contribute within a supportive engineering team.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £54,000 - £63,000 per annum– dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
