Delivery Orchestration Lead

Business Unit:  IT and Digital
Requisition Number:  11713

About us

At National Grid, our commitment to a cleaner, greener energy future is powered by the dedication and ingenuity of our people. Join our team as a Delivery Orchestration Lead and be a part of something bigger—where your unique skills and passions can make a real difference. Together, we are superpowered.

National Grid is hiring a Delivery Orchestration Lead on a permanent basis. This position is based in Warwick. This role operates under a hybrid working model. Hybrid work expectations are subject to business needs and company policy.

What you'll do

As Delivery Orchestration Lead, you'll keep delivery flowing across our digital deliveries. You'll own cross-product and platform delivery flow from planning through to go-live, coordinate the Release Train Engineers, and give leadership a single credible view of what is committed and what will land. You'll be accountable, alongside other members of the product, architecture and engineering community as appropriate, for the following:

Integrated planning

  • Own the integrated delivery plan across products and platforms as the single credible view of committed change, refreshed each Programme Increment and maintained between.
  • Lead Programme Increment planning across the trains, covering readiness, facilitation, dependency mapping and confirmation of the commitments made.

Dependencies, impediments and risk

  • Publish the cross-train dependency and impediment view, drive resolution to agreed dates, and escalate where progress stalls.
  • Own the delivery risk position across the trains, with named owners, mitigations and a clear decision required of leadership.

Release and go-live assurance

  • Own the integrated release schedule and the sequencing of interdependent releases across products, platforms and business areas.
  • Assure environment readiness and evidence release readiness ahead of every go-live decision, including cutover, rollback and early-life support arrangements.

Delivery insight and predictability

  • Publish delivery cadence and predictability reporting covering  predictability, throughput, cycle time and capacity.
  • Use that evidence to diagnose and fix delivery problems rather than simply to report status, and agree improvement targets with each train.

Coordinate the Release Train Engineers

  • Work with the Release Train Engineers to set objectives, managing performance and development, and holding each to a consistent operating standard across their train.
  • Own the delivery career pathway, the hiring standard for Release Train Engineer and delivery roles, and the delivery community of practice.
  • Plan Release Train Engineer capacity  across the trains, including cover for absence and the onboarding of new trains.

Partners and collaboration

  • Hold system integrators and managed service partners to the train cadence and the integrated plan, and report partner delivery performance.
  • Partner with the Product Management, Solution Architecture and Engineering Enablement Leads so that the four practice standards form one coherent operating model.

About you

  • Extensive experience of orchestrating delivery across multiple Agile Release Trains, products and platforms in a complex organisation.
  • Deep, practical knowledge of scaled agile, ideally SAFe, including the roles, cadences, ceremonies and artefacts that make Agile Release Trains work in practice rather than in theory.
  • Proven track record of leading Programme Increment planning at scale, including readiness, facilitation, dependency mapping and management of the programme board and risks raised.
  • Experience of leading or coaching Release Train Engineers, Scrum Masters or equivalent delivery roles, with the credibility to set standards they will follow.
  • Experience of owning integrated delivery plans and release schedules across interdependent trains and workstreams, including release and environment management, cutover planning and go-live assurance.
  • Confident use of flow, capacity and predictability metrics to diagnose delivery problems and drive measurable improvement.
  • Experience of managing delivery through system integrators and managed service partners, aligning partner ways of working to the train cadence.
  • A good understanding of financial management, benefits management and realisation linked to business results.
  • Ability to successfully operate at a senior manager level, forming strong relationships and engagement as needed across all levels of the Business Entity.
  • Experience of working within a heavily matrixed organisation, with the ability to drive for results.
  • Good leadership, relationship, communication and presentation skills combined with a strong track record of delivery.

What you'll get

  • Competitive Salary, based on capability and experience
  • Bonus of up to 30% based on personal and company performance

Additional benefits:

  • A competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%
  • Flexible benefits such as a cycle scheme, share incentive plan, technology schemes
  • Access to apps such as digital GP service for round the clock access to GP video consultations and NHS repeat prescriptions, wellbeing app to support your health and fitness
  • Access to Work + Family Space, providing support and resources for work and family life, including paid emergency childcare and eldercare
