National Grid is hiring a Cyber Technical Controls Assurance Engineer - This role can be based in either our Warwick, Leeds, Bristol or London offices.
Job Purpose
Join the National Grid’s Cyber Design Assurance Team, responsible for implementing highly technical Operational Technology (OT) systems for National Grid Electricity Transmission. You will contribute to solutions that protect a radically different energy system and electricity network, addressing the challenges of the future. This role places you at the forefront of an engineering transformation, ensuring a secure, affordable, and reliable Net Zero Energy System. You will play a critical role in shaping the future of energy as National Grid navigates an unprecedented technological shift.
What you'll do
- Lead the delivery of specification, design, and implementation of cyber security-related requirements associated with high voltage transmission Protection and Control schemes.
- Provide expert technical support to fault and incident investigations, ensuring optimal scope definition and coordination across projects in the Substations and Protection & Control (P&C) Portfolio.
- Ensure the application of the highest standards of Security, Safety, Quality, Sustainability, Environmental, and Resilience in maintaining excellent power system reliability.
- Act as the ‘National Grid Cyber Principal Designer Representative,’ providing detailed engineering support within cyber security and ensuring cost-effective option selection for project design and delivery.
- Offer expert technical advice and guidance on cyber security workstream requirements, providing 1st and 2nd line technical support.
- Lead technical aspects of external contracts and stakeholder relationships, optimizing value for customers and stakeholders.
- Apply design assurance on a risk-based approach and discharge the role of Designer on cyber projects, coordinating across several functions in line with National Grid procedural requirements.
- Authorise the role of Commissioning Officer (P&C) and, where required, the role of Relay Settings Engineer.
- Develop local and wider Business Procedures related to cyber security, incorporating lessons learned and best practices.
About you
- A numerate degree or demonstrable experience in a relevant engineering project environment.
- Advanced knowledge of international standards related to cyber security, including IEC62443 and IEC62351.
- Significant experience in project work within the Operational Technology sphere, with an expert understanding of cyber security requirements and utility or process industry operations.
- Strong understanding of the Cyber Assurance Framework (CAF) and Network and Information Systems Regulations (NIS) requirements, along with their impact on the OT environment.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage with multi-disciplined teams and audiences.
- Experience in building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, along with knowledge of negotiation and contract management.
- Expert knowledge of design, extension, and lifetime management of substation assets and associated cyber security requirements.
- A working knowledge of safety rules and the commissioning process, particularly in the area of operational technology cyber security associated with HV Transmission P&C schemes.

- £60,000 to £75,000 pa + Market supplement of £3,000 pa
