CNI Infrastructure Engineer
About us
At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it’s so much more than that. National Grid supplies us with the environment to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don’t plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark. So, join us as a CNI Infrastructure Engineer, and find your superpower.
National Grid is hiring a CNI Infrastructure Engineer for our CNI Operations team. This role is based at our Warwick office, with hybrid working. You’ll play a key role in designing, developing and supporting secure, scalable infrastructure platforms that underpin critical operations across our enterprise.
About The Role
Join National Grid’s CNI Operations Team as a CNI Infrastructure Engineer, where you’ll be at the heart of keeping the UK’s critical national infrastructure running safely, securely, and at scale. This is a role with real purpose — the work you do will directly support systems that millions of people rely on every day.
In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of designing, building and maintaining automation solutions that eliminate manual effort, boost reliability, and accelerate the delivery of IT operations. You won’t just support change—you’ll lead it, modernising and enhancing how we work across our data centres, networks, and platform environments.
Your focus will be on automating the end‑to‑end lifecycle of our private cloud infrastructure—from provisioning and configuration to monitoring and day‑to‑day operational routines. You’ll help us unlock new levels of speed, efficiency and consistency across our estate.
What You'll Do
As a CNI Infrastructure Engineer, you’ll be a driving force behind transforming how National Grid delivers and operates mission‑critical technology. Your work will directly accelerate efficiency, resilience, and innovation across our private cloud and infrastructure landscape.
In this role, you will:
- Build infrastructure the modern way, developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform and Ansible
- Create reusable, scalable automation assets, including scripts, modules, and frameworks
- Develop and optimise CI/CD pipelines using platforms like GitHub Actions and GitLab CI
- Engineer automation solutions using Python, PowerShell or Bash
- Take ownership of our core server estate, managing and optimising physical and virtual environments, including VMware VCF and ESXi
- Deliver robust Linux administration across enterprise environments, covering installation, configuration, patching, and system hardening
- Administer enterprise storage solutions (SAN/NAS, object storage) and backup technologies such as Veeam
- Engineer and maintain resilient networking environments across LAN/WAN, SD-WAN, VLANs, BGP/OSPF, VPNs, load balancers, and firewalls
- Support platform reliability through monitoring, troubleshooting, performance optimisation, and capacity planning
- Contribute to incident response, root cause analysis, and 24/7 on-call support where required
- Drive automation of operational processes, reducing manual effort and improving efficiency
- Champion security best practices across patching, vulnerability management, IAM, and network segmentation
- Collaborate with SRE, security, application, and architecture teams on new services and complex changes
- Support disaster recovery planning and testing, ensuring high availability and resilience across the platform
About You
You’re someone who thrives in complex technical environments and loves getting under the hood of enterprise infrastructure. You bring a blend of solid engineering fundamentals, problem‑solving instincts, and a curiosity to keep learning. Here’s what you’ll bring to the team:
- A deep understanding of enterprise IT infrastructure — from compute and storage to backups, networks, operating systems (Windows/Linux), and middleware.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, using tools like Terraform and Ansible to build and manage environments more efficiently.
- Scripting capabilities in PowerShell, Bash, or Python — and a willingness to automate anything that can (and should!) be automated.
- Strong, hands‑on experience with Linux systems in enterprise environments, including installation, configuration, administration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, patching, and security hardening.
- Strong knowledge of Active Directory Domain Services, with the ability to design, manage, and troubleshoot directory‑based environments.
- Hands‑on virtualisation expertise, especially with VMware vSphere and VCF.
- A confident grasp of networking essentials, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, and firewalls.
- Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery strategies, high‑availability designs, and business continuity principles.
- Knowledge of modern storage solutions such as vSAN, NAS, and object storage platforms.
- A proven track record of solving tricky, multi‑layered technical issues, often across several technologies at once.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, understandable language for non‑technical stakeholders.
What You'll Get
