National Grid is hiring a Associate Software Engineer on a permanent basis. This position is based in Warwick. You will also have the opportunity to work from our co-working space in London. This role is designated as hybrid, with an expectation of 3-4 days per month in the office. Requirements may vary based on business needs and company policy.

About The Role

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, gaining hands-on experience building and maintaining modern, cloud-based platforms. What You'll Do

 

  • Gain hands-on experience building scalable, high-performance software, contributing to either frontend (React, Next.js, TypeScript) or backend (C#, .NET Core) development.
  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code aligned with long-term business objectives and modern engineering best practices.
  • Develop an understanding of distributed systems, including deployment processes, performance optimisation, reliability, and security considerations.
  • Work within Agile and Lean methodologies to deliver value iteratively, collaborating closely with both business and technical stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Follow engineering and architecture standards, contributing to code reviews, testing and QA activities, and maintaining clear documentation to support knowledge sharing and continuity.

About You

 

  • A strong interest in software engineering, with a basic understanding of either frontend or backend development and some hands-on experience (through education or work) being advantageous.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs, alongside an understanding of Azure cloud services and fundamental CI/CD principles.
  • A willingness to learn and apply a test-first approach, including automated testing, with any exposure to TDD or BDD considered a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the confidence to approach challenges logically and effectively.
  • A clear communicator with a creative, curious, and inquisitive mindset, eager to learn and continuously improve.
