Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

Available Roles
CX Data & Analytics (Waltham, MA)
Our Customer Data Product team is responsible for designing and overseeing the development of versatile customer data products for operational and analytical consumption by our various business teams. This effort is part of a broader initiative to create a newly integrated centralized customer data platform and analytics hub. As they continuously find ways to think outside the box, this team is able to use creative problem-solving skills to drive this important work forward.
As a Gridtern, you will be involved in creating reports and conducting analyses, utilizing JIRA to assist with requirements gathering and documentation. In this role, you will also gain hands-on experience with large-scale cloud data warehouse structures and leverage JIRA and Confluence to effectively interpret technical design and solution architecture documents. Additionally, you will support data management and cataloging solutions.

Design and Material Processing (Waltham, MA)
Our Design and Material Processing team facilitates project progression by guiding them through each stage of the engineering and design workflow, from the initial concept to final closeout. This team assists with work package preparation, design activities, modifications, and project completion, ensuring that everything operates efficiently and on schedule.
As a Gridtern, you will gain practical experience with real engineering and design projects, particularly focusing on our gas systems. This opportunity will enable you to assist in tracking project progress, monitoring costs, and supporting purchase orders and invoices. You will also contribute to the permitting process and help compile preliminary work packages that integrate project descriptions, historical asset data (such as GIS, scanned records, sketches, and more) for various engineering teams. This role will allow you to enhance your technical and organizational skills while learning how large-scale projects are successfully executed.

Gas Resource Coordination (Waltham, MA)
Our Gas Resource Coordination team is responsible for the successful execution of both mandatory gas compliance programs and customer-driven work. This team manages and schedules internal union crews and external contractors, aligning our workforce with project demands to ensure timely and complete delivery of all work.
As a Gridtern, you will support the team by performing clerical tasks, building spreadsheets, and creating Power BI reports to help coordinators with system changes in our Gas Business Enablement (GBE) system and data cleanup. This opportunity will also allow you to engage directly with field crews and travel to different yards across Massachusetts to ensure full exposure to the business. Through these experiences, you will gain a deeper understanding of the various aspects of gas resource coordination, including project management, compliance requirements, and the operational dynamics of working with both internal teams and external contractors.

IT & Digital (Waltham, MA)
Our IT & Digital team plays a key role in delivering technology in an agile and innovative way, helping to modernize the grid and support our mission of building a clean, fair, and affordable energy future. Working closely with our U.S. Electric Plan Value Stream team, this team focuses on creating solutions that range from predictive asset planning and maintenance to long-term, integrated energy planning.
As a Gridtern, you will partner with the Lead Product Manager to support the management of one or more products, while helping to maintain product backlogs and roadmaps. In this role, you’ll collaborate with Design, Engineering, and Business teams to align product vision and strategy. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in writing product stories, features, and roadmaps, while contributing to projects across the Plan Value Stream products.

National Grid Ventures Commercial Strategy (Waltham, MA)
National Grid Ventures (NGV) is at the forefront of the energy transition, operating in the UK, Europe, and the US to develop, operate, and invest in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. The mission of this team is to expedite society's progress towards net zero while ensuring a secure energy supply in the present. Within this context, the Commercial Strategy team is tasked with defining NGV’s comprehensive commercial and go-to-market strategy. They focus on identifying opportunities, conducting competitive intelligence, and assisting the Business Development team in establishing our partnership framework and enhancing the quality of commercial bids. Our New England Colleague Communication & Engagement team shares the stories that highlight how we deliver for our customers and drive a clean energy future. This team manages multiple internal communication channels and engages with employees to celebrate successes, showcase impactful work, and foster a sense of pride in what National Grid accomplishes every day. As a collaborative group, we work smart, have fun, and create a positive work experience by keeping colleagues informed and connected.
As a Gridtern, you’ll contribute by writing content for our internal company site and employee newsletter, capturing photos, producing videos, and designing digital signage. You’ll also support event planning and coordination at both our corporate offices and field sites, helping bring our stories and initiatives to life.

NGV US – Strategic Risk Management (Waltham, MA)
Our National Grid Ventures (NGV) – Strategic Risk Management team leads risk management and strategic planning to support the successful execution of commercial projects. They identify and assess critical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and provide executive-level insights to guide more efficient decision-making. Their work is highly collaborative, involving cross-functional teamwork and analysis to align with business goals and regulatory requirements. They play an important role in advancing National Grid’s mission to deliver clean, fair, and affordable energy while supporting innovation, sustainability, and long-term value creation.
As a Gridtern, you will gain hands-on experience supporting transmission and energy generation projects through research, planning, and communication tasks. You’ll help analyze market trends and government regulations, assist in organizing meetings and workshops, and support the creation of presentations and reports summarizing key findings for upper leadership. You’ll also have the chance to take on an independent project tailored to your interests, conducting research, gathering input from team members, and presenting your recommendations. Resource Coordination (West Roxbury, MA)
Our Resource Coordination team plays a crucial support role for Massachusetts Gas Operations, managing both union and contracted employees across all MA yards to ensure the achievement of daily and long-term business objectives. This involves compliance with union regulations to ensure that crew composition aligns with operational plans, which are shaped by various factors, including regulatory requirements, customer needs, and emergency work, all focused on maintaining the safety and reliability of our services.
As a Gridtern, you will assist with the implementation of Gas Business Enablement by developing guides and processes to be included in our "playbook" for new employees. This will involve comparing old and new systems, creating a reference point for existing employees. Additionally, you will provide clerical support throughout the summer as needed. This internship will offer you valuable insights into resource coordination and the operational aspects of gas services.

Resource Planning (Waltham, MA)
Our Resource Planning team is responsible for developing an annual workplan for non-complex gas projects across the organization. Throughout the year, team analysts provide data and reporting support, while program managers ensure that the work is completed by collaborating with various stakeholders. This team works to support budget management and speak to the capital forecast of various programs overseen by them.
As a Gridtern, you will support the broader construction program managers and analysts by assisting with daily, weekly, and monthly reporting, as well as contributing to a variety of smaller and larger projects. This role will offer you the opportunity to identify and implement improvements in processes, reporting, and ways of working, while adapting to ongoing changes and opportunities for optimization. Additionally, as you support with the creation of various Excel reports, you will also use your analytical skills to brainstorm effective strategies and solutions.

Strategic Workforce Development (Waltham, MA)
Our Strategic Workforce Development team is dedicated to building a sustainable pipeline of diverse talent. This team works to ensure that the workforce reflects the communities that our organization serves while equipping employees with the skills to build and operate a net zero energy system, supporting our broader mission of enabling the energy transition for all.
As a Gridtern, you will contribute to this mission by helping create monthly newsletters for both internal and external audiences, while also maintaining the Program Development, Governance & Partnerships team’s external calendar of events and opportunities. You will play a key role in organizing and attending outreach events at local high schools and colleges/universities, as well as supporting the development of skills-based curriculum to prepare students for future careers in energy. Through these experiences, you will gain valuable exposure to various workforce development strategies while directly supporting programs that shape the next generation of energy professionals.

US Gas IT (Waltham, MA)
Our US Gas IT team delivers value by implementing IT solutions that support our Gas Operations strategy and goals. This team organizes work into value streams, which are capability-focused areas, to structure initiatives, strengthen business capabilities, and develop clear outcomes for each investment. By doing so, they can drive strategic technology investments that meet operational needs while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of National Grid’s Gas Operations.
As a Gridtern, you will support the team in managing the project portfolio, assisting with reporting, participating in project execution, and contributing to production support activities. This internship will provide hands-on experience in IT project delivery, exposure to enterprise systems, and insight into how technology enables critical gas operations. You may also have the opportunity to contribute across various areas that the team supports, including Portfolio Management & Reporting, Project Execution (Agile and Waterfall), Production Support and Issue Resolution, Process Improvement and Documentation, and Learning & Development.
What You’ll Need
- Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer
- Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
- Majoring in Communications, Photography, Journalism, Public Relations, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Engineering, Public Policy, Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Statistics, Finance, Human Resources, Labor Economics, Political Science, Education, Social Work, Organizations Development, Labor Relations, Public Policy, Data Analytics, Construction Management, Mathematics or related majors.
- Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age
- Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)
- Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be specified in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$20.00-$28.00 an hour
Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.
Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
