Job Purpose
As Massachusetts accelerates toward its climate and clean energy goals, National Grid is implementing its Electric Sector Modernization Plan (ESMP)to enable an electric network that supports the Commonwealth's climate, clean energy, and equity objectives and delivers the fair, affordable, and clean energy transition for all our customers and communities. A key component of this transformation is the deployment of Non-Wires Alternatives (NWAs), clean energy solutions that leverage customer-sited resources and virtual power plants (VPPs) to alleviate grid constraints and potentially defer traditional infrastructure investments.
The Senior Program Manager will lead the implementation of a portfolio of NWA projects across National Grid’s Massachusetts service territory. This role requires a strategic thinker and skilled individual who can coordinate across internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and scalable grid flexibility solutions.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the implementation and management of a portfolio of NWA solutions that utilize utility assets, customer programs, and grid services to address localized grid constraints.
- Drive innovation in NWA deployment, including new community engagement models, streamlined internal processes, and improved tracking and reporting mechanisms.
- Act as the primary liaison between internal teams (e.g., Marketing, Corporate Affairs, Procurement, Legal, Customer Programs, Distribution Planning, Digital, Control Center Operations) and third-party contractors/subcontractors.
- Provide end-to-end project management for multiple NWA initiatives, including:
- Opportunity screening and benefit/cost analysis
- RFP development and vendor selection
- Budget and schedule oversight
- Contractor management and issue resolution
- Data, settlement and billing operational support
- Capture and apply lessons learned across projects to enhance future performance.
- Stay current on NWA/VPP innovations and best practices.
- Support regulatory strategy for NWAs through filing preparation and coordination.
- Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to internal leadership and external stakeholders.
- Occasional travel within Massachusetts is required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, sciences, economics (related fields) or 6-8 years of experience in the utility/energy sector required.
- Passion for decarbonization and the clean energy transition.
- 3–5 years of experience in project or program management, with a track record of managing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives required.
- Strong understanding of distributed energy resources (DERs), including energy efficiency, demand response, energy storage, NWAs, and distributed generation.
- Experience collaborating with or working for a Flexibility Service Provider (FSP; such as a demand response provider, DER aggregator, or solar/storage developer) is a strong plus.
- Project Management Professional (PMP), Professional Engineer (PE), Engineer in Training (EIT), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), and/or similar credentials preferred.
- Experience drafting RFPs and conducting benefit/cost analyses.
- Excellent relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills.
- High level of initiative and ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast-evolving environments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

Salary: $105,000 - $123,000
This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
