National Grid is hiring a   Senior Engineer (Electrical Planning and Design), Electrical Engineering for Massachusetts. This is a Onsite Role - Must live within a commutable distance to Waltham, MA. 

Job Purpose

To provide technical expertise and support from an engineering perspective to ensure effective National Grid operations.

The substation Electrical Engineer performs a wide range of duties including the conceptual primary and secondary scoping for small-and large-scale electric substation projects in New England. This will require engagement and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. The Option Solution Engineering (OSE) team is responsible for proving the feasibility of proposed options within stage 4.2 Options Solutions Documents (OSDs) and developing a conceptual level cost estimate associated with each option.

Key Accountabilities

  • Thoroughly investigate the feasibility and cost efficiency of proposed options to satisfy an electrical substation need.
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams to complete feasibility and conceptual engineering and design for transmission and distribution class substations up to and including 345kV
  • Designs include modifications and additions to existing sites and 'green' field (new construction) locations.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
  • Utilize and understand National Grid electric standards, drawings and Geographical Information System (GIS) to aid in the development of scope and feasibility within the project schedule.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to Options Solutions Engineering, Transmission Planning & Distribution planning departments for substation design work.
  • Collaborate with National Grid’s Protection Engineering, Control & Integration & Telecommunication functional departments and keep up to date on National Grid’s design standards & policies.
  • Organize, manage and maintain the schedule of multiple projects running in parallel.
  • Develop relationships with internal & external stakeholders in order to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid.
  • Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of personnel.
  • Maintain the qualification to enter electrical substations including NERC/CIP designations.
  • File project documentation and communication per department procedures

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited engineering program. Emphasis in electric power is a plus.
  • Minimum of 4 years work experience.
  • Candidate who have passed the FE exam preferred but not necessary.
  • Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes.
  • Knowledge of the following is desired: Substation Equipment including Transformers, Breakers, Switches, Reclosers, Metal Clad Switchgear, etc. Substation construction and maintenance techniques, Electric utility operation practices, Preliminary Analysis including AC and DC sizing, Grounding and Lightning study analysis.
  • Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards and existing electrical design codes including IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NESC and Building Code.
  • Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of personnel.
  • Demonstration of effective time management and task prioritization and capability to independently projects tasks and apply technical skills with minimal oversight FE exam preferred. PE license is a plus.
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Proven interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.

Salary - $129,000 - $152,000
