This role operates under a hybrid working model and is based out of our Waltham, MA, or the Brooklyn, NY office.  Hybrid work expectations are subject to business needs and company policy.

Job Purpose

The Senior Data Engineering Manager is a dynamic, collaborative leader responsible for guiding the design and delivery of scalable, high-performing data solutions in a large-volume enterprise environment. This role oversees engineering teams responsible for solution implementation and ensures technical design decisions are clearly communicated to business and technology stakeholders.

 

The position will support a major IT initiative focused on improving how National Grid employees serve customers today while building the data platform needed to support future growth.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide oversight of system designs, plus data solution development including data migration and extracts to/from a variety of systems.
  • Provide day-to-day managerial support and leadership of multiple engineering teams responsible for implementation of a strategic data platform.
  • Ensure that there are consistent updates to Jira boards, system documentation, data catalogs and the governance platform.
  • Participate in and provide oversight of design and pre-deployment (governance) reviews.
  • Participate in design database design reviews
  • Provide oversight of business-as-usual and system-conversion initiatives
  • Participate in annual budget, business case, and quarterly planning
  • Assist in determining the cross-application data standards, data distribution standards and promote data-driven design
  • Monitor deliverables ensuring quality and traceability to requirements and adherence to all quality management plans and governance standards
  • Work with the team to ensure that all components work together to meet objectives and performance goals as defined in the requirements. Identify and communicate any cross-area or cross-release issues that may affect other areas of the project
  • Participate in go-live preparation activities such as QA, dress rehearsals, issue remediation, cutover and go-live aftercare
  • Participate in data management maturity assessments to identify gaps and pain points for capabilities including data quality, governance, analytics, metadata management, master data management
  • Coordinate responses and artifact collection for periodic audits
  • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in processes, procedures and systems with regards to data

Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience in database development: Snowflake (preferred), SQL Server, Oracle, etc.
  • 5 years’ experience in supervisory roles leading engineers/SW developers
  • Experience in a dynamic work environment
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment, and be capable of building and maintaining positive relationships with other staff, departments, and customers
  • Strong communication skills, written and oral
  • Experience with MS Azure
  • Experience with cloud data architecture
  • Experience with Snowflake is a plus
  • Experience with ETL methods, system integration techniques
  • Experience with Reporting environments (Power BI preferred)
  • Experience with data governance programs
  • Experience with maintenance, and operational support programs/processes.
  • Experience with budgeting
  • Vendor management skills
  • Experience with Agile/Lean software development process and practice is a plus
  • Experience in with SaaS solutions such as Salesforce, ESRI and Workforce is a plus

Salary

Waltham: $165k - $194k a year

Brooklyn: $177k - $208k a year
