Job Purpose

National Grid’s Central Engineering Support (CES) team is seeking a Lead Engineer to provide trusted technical expertise to energy efficiency and decarbonization programs. This role will validate and improve savings and incentive calculations, support automation, perform engineering quality checks for vendor-serviced programs, and equip Program Managers with clear technical guidance. The Lead Engineer will also support new products and programs after launch, working with internal teams, external stakeholders, and vendors to deliver accurate, reliable tools and results. Success in this role requires sound judgment, strong analytical and project management skills, the ability to mentor junior engineers, and a commitment to accuracy, integrity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Validate and automate calculations: Develop, maintain, and improve formulas, evaluation inputs, and system-based calculations for energy savings and incentives, ensuring alignment with approved methods and program standards.
  • Strengthen engineering quality: Perform engineering quality checks for vendor-serviced programs, review program data and documentation, and resolve issues with internal and external partners to support accurate, consistent results.
  • Provide technical guidance: Advise program managers, technical teams, sales, and product teams on energy efficiency and decarbonization requirements to support sound decisions and successful program delivery.
  • Support products and programs after launch: Partner with business and technology teams to maintain and enhance tools, address implementation needs, and drive process improvements that increase rigor, scalability, and customer value.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with six or more years of relevant energy efficiency or energy policy experience, or a master’s degree in engineering with four or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with commercial and industrial and/or residential and multifamily energy efficiency programs and savings calculation methodologies.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with attention to detail and the ability to adapt to new projects, products, and stakeholders.
  • Preferred: CEM and/or BPI certification and experience with energy calculations, building modelling, program planning, design, implementation, or energy policy.

Salary

$150,000 - $176,000 a year
