Job Purpose
As the clean energy transition accelerates and electrification increases demand on the electric grid, utilities are pursuing innovative strategies to unlock the value of distributed energy resources (DERs) and grid flexibility to enhance system reliability, strengthen grid resilience, and enable a more efficient energy system. Non-Wires Alternatives (NWAs), Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), and other flexibility solutions can provide reliability, resilience, and operational benefits to the electric grid.
National Grid’s Electric Sector Modernization Plan (ESMP) outlines a pathway to a more flexible, resilient, and customer-centric electric system capable of supporting electrification and decarbonization goals. To advance this vision, National Grid is seeking to accelerate the deployment of grid flexibility solutions to support Massachusetts' clean energy and climate goals. National Grid’s Non-Wires Alternative program, and broader grid flexibility initiatives that develop innovative approaches to leveraging energy efficiency, demand response, energy storage, distributed generation, and other distributed energy resources (DERs) to deliver value to customers and the electric system, will require a series of digital investments to enable the best customer experience and an efficient operational implementation.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop and deliver National Grid’s digital strategy for enabling grid flexibility and distributed energy resources (DERs) to contribute to grid services in Massachusetts, ensuring alignment with regulatory priorities and business needs, and the objectives of National Grid’s ESMP.
- Take ownership of the design and implementation of a portfolio of digital investments to support the long-term success of the desired end state of a flexibly-managed electric distribution network, including liaising with internal IT functions to prioritize work across the wider US Electric portfolio.
- Define and articulate requirements for digital capabilities supporting flexibility markets and operational requirements, engaging with third-party vendors, where necessary.
- Collaborate with Digital and IT teams to support development and prioritization of enabling tools and systems.
- Working with others, ensure flexibility market design is aligned with system capabilities and scalability considerations.
- Contribute to planning for the procurement, data, measurement, and settlement processes required to operate markets on a scale.
- Take responsibility for managing the portfolio of digital products through the internal IT governance process, presenting to IT and Electric leadership when required.
- Contribute to digital communication channels and specific website content to promote National Grid's activities in the flexibility space.
- Responsibility for delivering and enforcing governance frameworks that underpin wider digital initiatives, ensuring effective portfolio governance, strategic alignment, investment prioritization, stakeholder engagement, risk oversight, and the realization of intended business outcomes.
- Represent National Grid externally through industry forums, stakeholder engagement, conferences, regulatory proceedings, and other development activities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Passion for decarbonization, clean energy, and driving innovation.
- 3+ years of relevant experience, including demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Digital product ownership or project management of a suite of tools used to enable operational and market-facing capabilities.
- Stakeholder management experience working with cross-functional senior leadership teams and third-party vendors.
- Digital product strategy, platform enablement, or technology implementation supporting energy markets or utility operations.
- Experience collaborating with utilities, DER developers, aggregators, flexibility providers, or other energy market stakeholders.
- Ability to influence and align diverse technical, commercial, regulatory, and external stakeholders.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.
- Understanding of utility regulatory frameworks, grid modernization initiatives, and the Massachusetts clean energy landscape preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and collaboration tools.

Salary
$136,000 - $160,000 a year
