Technical Land Manager

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  12797

About the role

Shape land policy for the UK’s clean energy future

This is an opportunity to influence the land policy and stakeholder environment behind some of the UK’s most important energy infrastructure, helping shape how major projects are delivered and representing National Grid at the heart of the land and infrastructure sector.

As Technical Land Manager (External Stakeholder and Industry Engagement), you’ll lead engagement with government departments, professional and industry bodies, infrastructure organisations and major land stakeholders. You’ll build influential relationships, contribute to policy and industry thinking, and ensure National Grid has a strong, credible voice on the issues affecting land and infrastructure delivery.

Working across Strategic Infrastructure, Electricity Transmission and Existing Infrastructure, you’ll provide insight on land policy, legislation and industry developments, identifying emerging risks, opportunities and areas where National Grid can influence change. You’ll also lead our Land Industry Engagement Strategy and represent National Grid through consultations, industry forums, conferences and working groups.

This is a highly visible role for someone with strong land expertise, sound political judgement and the confidence to engage with and influence senior stakeholders.

The role is open to applicants across the UK, with hybrid working between home and a National Grid office. Travel across England and Wales will be required for stakeholder meetings, conferences and industry events.

What you'll do

Build influential external relationships

  • Develop trusted relationships with government departments, public bodies, professional institutions, landowner organisations, infrastructure operators and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent National Grid at industry forums, conferences, consultations, working groups and stakeholder events.
  • Build collaboration across the land and infrastructure sector to improve practice and support the delivery of nationally significant infrastructure.

Shape policy and industry thinking

  • Lead horizon scanning across emerging legislation, regulation, government policy and industry developments affecting land and infrastructure delivery.
  • Develop and deliver National Grid’s Land Industry Engagement Strategy, focusing our external relationships where they can have the greatest impact.
  • Shape policy positions and responses to government consultations, industry reviews and working groups, ensuring National Grid’s priorities and practical delivery experience are represented.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen National Grid’s external profile through industry forums, professional networks and speaking opportunities.

Provide strategic insight and advice

  • Advise senior Land leaders on emerging policy, stakeholder risks, opportunities and changes in the external environment.
  • Support business planning and future projects through early engagement with key stakeholders and industry organisations.
  • Work across Land, Legal, Strategic Consents, Regulation, External Affairs and Corporate Affairs to develop clear, coordinated positions on key issues.

Strengthen communication and external engagement

  • Develop clear, compelling briefings, presentations, position statements and consultation responses on complex land and infrastructure issues.
  • Communicate confidently with senior internal and external audiences, providing credible advice and advocacy.
  • Share external insight across the Land function and help colleagues take a consistent, effective approach to stakeholder engagement.

About you

  • Significant experience in external stakeholder engagement, industry representation, land strategy or external affairs within a land, property, infrastructure or regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of land rights acquisition, compulsory purchase, planning and major infrastructure delivery.
  • Experience of building influential relationships with government departments, regulators, professional institutions, industry bodies and other strategic stakeholders.
  • The credibility, judgement and confidence to represent an organisation externally and influence senior stakeholders on complex or politically sensitive issues.
  • Experience of influencing policy, preparing consultation responses or contributing to industry guidance, forums or working groups.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn complex policy, regulatory and stakeholder issues into clear advice and recommendations.
  • A degree or equivalent professional experience in land, property, planning, infrastructure, policy or another relevant discipline.

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary between £65,000 - £80,000 – dependent on capability.
  • An annual performance bonus of up to 30% of your eligible earnings in the performance year.
  • Job requirement company car.
  • 28 days annual leave plus eight statutory days.

  • A generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
