Surveyor - Strategic Infrastructure

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  4658

About the role

Help deliver the biggest upgrade to the UK’s electricity grid in generations.

As energy use rises and the UK accelerates towards net zero, we’re building the infrastructure that will connect clean energy to millions of homes and businesses. Our Land Teams are central to making this happen.

We’re looking for Surveyors to play a key role in The Great Grid Upgrade – providing land rights and acquisitions services for new National Grid electrical assets. You’ll work with landowners, communities and project teams to ensure we deliver essential infrastructure responsibly and effectively.

Bring your expertise, curiosity and drive, and you’ll help shape a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

These roles will initially be aligned to projects based in either West Yorkshire or Wales/West Midlands; however, candidates should be willing to travel as part of the role.

Why join us?

  • Work on nationally significant, career‑defining linear projects
  • Make a real impact on the UK’s clean energy transition
  • Hybrid, flexible working across multiple office hubs (Warwick, Birmingham, London, Leeds)
  • Join a supportive, collaborative, skilled and purpose‑driven team

Key accountabilities

  • Lead land rights and acquisitions from development to construction, securing survey access and negotiating compensation settlements.
  • Apply National Grid’s Land Rights Strategy to ensure transparent, consistent and efficient delivery.
  • Turn complex land and consent issues into clear updates on progress. Actively address potential risks and maintain robust financial forecasting to support informed decision-making.
  • Build strong relationships with landowners, internal and external stakeholders and partners, communicating confidently across diverse audiences.
  • Use your DCO/CPO experience to navigate complex lands challenges and raise the profile of the lands function.
  • Use strong commercial and negotiation skills to secure positive outcomes with suppliers and contractors.
  • Support senior colleagues with procuring and managing external resource.
  • Share best practice and mentor junior team members to drive continuous improvement.

About you

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential to delivering the UK’s energy infrastructure. As a Surveyor within our team, you’ll bring technical expertise, sound judgement and strong stakeholder skills to help secure the land rights that keep our projects moving.

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, able to build trust with landowners, external partners, and internal teams while representing the organisation with professionalism.
  • Strong stakeholder management capability, balancing the often‑competing needs of project teams, landowners, statutory bodies and customers with clarity and confidence.
  • Proven experience delivering end‑to‑end land surveying and land rights activities on utility or infrastructure projects — including access arrangements, land referencing, securing land rights, and negotiating compensation.
  • Experience working closely with multidisciplinary teams such as engineering, legal, environmental and consenting functions to support smooth project delivery.
  • Solid project and programme management skills, including the ability to track risks, budgets, contract performance and progress, and report clearly and accurately.
  • A delivery‑focused mindset, ensuring land activities are completed efficiently, on time and within budget.
  • A strong understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to land rights, surveying practice and the statutory powers available to National Grid.
  • Knowledge of consenting regimes for complex linear projects, including Development Consent Orders (DCO), Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) and the associated compensation code.
  • Willingness to travel for on-site meetings and collaborative work with the project or wider lands team.
  • Desirable: Degree‑level qualification (or equivalent) in a related discipline, and/or progression toward AssocRICS or MRICS, with a commitment to ongoing professional development.

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary between £48,000 - £61,000 – dependent on capability.
  • Market supplement of £3,000 per annum.
  • Job requirement company car.
  • An annual performance bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • A comprehensive internal training programme along with support for relevant external courses.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
