National Grid is hiring an Substation Project Supervisor - We are open to locations around Newcastle & Sheffield (or surrounding areas).
How do you ensure high levels of safety and quality across various sites?
This is more than just a job—it’s your opportunity to shape the future of the UK’s electricity network. In this key role, you’ll help expand and strengthen the grid to connect and transport more renewable and low-carbon energy to homes and businesses. Keeping the lights on and society moving.
As a National Grid Representative, you’ll oversee a range of construction based projects (£100k - £10m) such as HV transformer and shunt reactor installations to cable replacements, cyber security upgrades, and protection and control system replacements across the North East region – Newcastle to Sheffield. With a company vehicle, paid travel, and a strong work-life balance culture, you’ll have the support you need to thrive.
Your expertise will ensure that site-based construction activities—whether delivered by our principal contractors or National Grid’s internal teams—are managed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. You’ll champion safety and quality, support site teams in meeting CDM regulations, help with plant and equipment procurement, conduct regular safety audits, and lead coordination meetings during project delivery. You’ll also contribute to scheme development by completing site visit reports and facilitating site visits with designers.

Must haves:
- Minimum Level 3 NVQ / ONC Engineering qualification.
- A proven track record in the Utilities (or comparable) industry construction.
- Can demonstrate a good understanding of CDM regs and quality management systems as supervisor under NEC and/or self-delivered works.
- Experience of Safety, Health, Environmental, Quality.
- An awareness of Project, Contract and Stakeholder management.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- SSSTS or SMSTS qualification.
- Principal Contractor Representative (PC) / Site Manager & Temporary Works Co-ordinator under National Grid’s Procedures.
- NEBOSH / IOSH.
