National Grid is hiring a Substation Project Engineer   - This position covers the below operational zones: Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire  however there are expectations to assist in other operational zones in central when required.

Job Purpose

 

You will be responsible for successfully facilitating the delivery of Asset Operations schemes within the specified time, cost, and specifications, in accordance with the Network Development Process and the business's regulatory and stakeholder commitments. You will ensure that health, safety, and environmental issues are managed throughout the process, drive accurate up-front design information, and provide on-site support during delivery. Additionally, you will oversee the completion of closure activities across the allocated schemes.

What you'll do

 

  • Lead the development stage of schemes: guide design work, coordinate inspections/site reports, and run design reviews including sharing lessons learned.
  • Determine the most efficient contracting and delivery approach, produce competent tender information, complete tendering activities, and support evaluations.
  • Work with Ops Managers / Project Leads / Network Outcomes to accurately forecast demand and build tactical plans.
  • Act as single point of contact for self-delivered schemes and perform NEC Project Manager / Client's Delegated Representative / Principal Designer (or arrange equivalent roles) in line with CDM.
  • Manage contractors and internal teams to deliver to time/cost/spec, ensuring safety, quality, environmental compliance and correct incident reporting.
  • Oversee commissioning, performance testing, and ensure accurate final “as built” and handover documentation.
  • Provide monthly reporting on progress, SHE performance, risks, and financial forecast to support regulatory reporting and capital planning.
  • Lead change control, drive business improvements, manage scope variations, and support project close-out including snagging and multi-project site coordination.

About you

 

  • Proficient technical knowledge of the Electricity Transmission System.
  • Knowledge of business processes and governance (desirable).
  • Understanding of RIIO mechanisms (desirable).
  • A good knowledge and understanding of substation work and/or HV cable systems, encompassing electrical, mechanical, civil and telecoms engineering disciplines. In depth technical knowledge relating to the electrical and safety aspects of substation plant.
  • Excellent Project Management skills including management of risk for delivery of projects to scope, time, cost, quality, safety and security of supply.
  • Knowledge in Contract management specific to fixed price and target cost contracts.
  • Working knowledge and application of CDM Regulations.
  • Proficient understanding and experience of Safety and Environmental legislation, practices and policies.
  • Knowledge of change management approaches.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrable experience of stakeholder management.
  • Proficient business writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of problem solving and an appetite for continuous improvement.
  • Good influencing and negotiating skills.

What you'll get

 

A competitive salary around £45,000 - £55,000 – dependent on capability + Market Supplement of £4500 + Company Car
