Senior Project Manager - Northeast England

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  7906

About the role

National Grid's Electricity Transmission System is undergoing a once in a generation upgrade to meet changing generation and demand requirements as part of the UK’s journey to net zero. As a Senior Project Manager, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering the infrastructure needed to power a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Based in the Northeast of England, you’ll lead a complex portfolio of substation upgrades and customer connection projects. You’ll be responsible for integrating and optimising delivery across major programmes, managing risk effectively and driving successful outcomes.

Safety, health and environmental excellence will be at the forefront of your work. You’ll take full ownership of projects from inception through to completion—ensuring delivery is safe, compliant, and meets quality and timeline expectations—while also driving continuous improvement in how we plan and execute.

Leading a multidisciplinary team, you’ll guide projects through the key stage of the lifecycle, including funding and option selection, design, procurement, governance, contract award and construction planning.

This is a critical role in enabling new generation and connecting customers to the energy they need. We’re looking for an inclusive, customer-focused leader who empowers others to succeed and is passionate about successful delivery.

Our projects span the Northeast, so you’ll need to be within commuting distance of Leeds or York. You’ll primarily be based on site or in our Leeds (Cross Gates) office, with regular regional travel, alongside the flexibility to work from home on an ad hoc basis.

What you'll need

We’re looking for a motivated and delivery-focused professional who is committed to ensuring projects are completed safely, on time and within budget. You’ll be someone who can inspire, empower and bring out the best in others to achieve high performance.

You’ll bring a strong background in construction project management, underpinned by solid commercial awareness. Experience of leading cross-functional teams within an operational environment is essential, along with a good understanding of portfolio-level financial management and reporting.

As an experienced Project Manager, you’ll have sound knowledge of CDM, safety and environmental regulations, and a proactive, forward-thinking approach. You’ll be confident in challenging assumptions, identifying risks early and putting effective solutions in place. Experience gained outside of a client-side role—whether with a contractor or customer would be useful.

Ideally, you’ll hold a degree or professional qualification in project management, engineering, or a related discipline (or have equivalent experience). A full UK driving licence is also required.

What's in it for you?

  • Salary of £73,000 - £82,000 dependent on experience and capability
  • Company car
  • Annual Performance Based Bonus up to 30% of your base salary
  • 28 days annual leave plus eight statutory days, and the option to buy additional or sell holiday days
  • Generous contributory pension scheme – we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%
