We are recruiting for a Senior Project Manager to oversee the development and construction of a series of HVDC projects on the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) project along the East Coast of the UK. This role offers hybrid working with travel required to Edinburgh and Walpole. We’re happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to make this role work for you.

Job Purpose

 

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is developing and constructing a series of HVDC projects along the East Coast of the UK, that will be delivered within joint venture partnerships. 

 

Your role will be to manage EPC projects to time and budget, hitting key milestones along the way, focussing on the construction of a Converter Station. You’ll be accountable for meeting agreed programme, cost and quality outcomes, while embedding health, safety and environmental excellence throughout the project lifecycle and delivering against regulatory, stakeholder and customer commitments.

 

Reporting to the Head of Delivery, you’ll be responsible for the delivery of a Converter Station and lead a multidisciplinary team of Project Managers and Project Supervisors through the project life cycle.

What You'll Do

 

  • Lead, develop and performance manage a team to develop, sanction and deliver the project safely, to time, cost and specification. 
  • Managing the Delivery Team to develop, deliver and close-out the construction and installation of a Converter Station in Walpole, Norfolk.
  • Working collaboratively with National Grid and JV Partner colleagues.
  • Working closely with our OEM Contractors.
  • Manage key stakeholders to remove any blockers to the timely completion of the project.
  • Ensure that sanctioning, development and tendering strategies are agreed early in development, and that the engineered solution delivers the essential scope at an optimal cost.
  • Challenge project teams to ensure project scope, designs and delivery solutions are innovative, efficient, and fit for purpose.
  • Lead and embed positive safety culture and process safety within team to improve collective safety performance ensuring adherence to company policy, aims and objectives.
  • Ensure that the construction programme accounts for all known delivery risks and CDM issues, including construction safety, health, environment and sustainability.
  • Ensure that all essential documentation is completed to the highest possible standard, supporting the investment case and delivery strategy.
  • Accountable for first level assurance across all team activities and responsibilities.
  • Design Development co-ordination with cable, DNO, Civils interfaces.
  • Liaison with consents teams to ensure planning conditions are met.
  • Ensuring programme activities are completed to achieve key milestones.
  • Employing a robust risk management process, identifying both risks and opportunities and working with the wider team to manage the risks in a timely manner.
  • Effective change control management, ensuring the project remains within governance.
  • Fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of seniority, feels able to share their concerns.
  • Fostering a collaborative environment with the supply chain, including principal contractors; suppliers of services and plant; customers; landowners; and local authorities, residents and businesses.
  • Ensuring visible and accessible communications are in place throughout the life of a project.
  • Oversee contracting strategies, tendering and Works Information development.
  • Support project governance, documentation, testing, commissioning and asset handover.
  • Mentor junior team members and maintain professional authorisation standards.

About You

 

  • Strong background in project management or engineering, with experience delivering EPC projects and programmes.
  • Experience applying change control processes on target cost and lump‑sum construction contracts. 
  • Understanding of contracting strategies and procurement, with experience managing contracts through the full end‑to‑end project lifecycle. 
  • Ability to draw on commercial analysis and highlight reports to support decision‑making and maintain strong financial control. 
  • Confident operating within regulated environments and established governance frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of CDM, health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • A strong technical foundation in a related subject such as civil engineering/geotechnical/construction.
  • Substation or converter station experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Proven experience leading cross‑functional teams and managing diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong communicator with excellent influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Full UK driving license.

A competitive salary up to £81,000 per annum based on experience.
