Senior Environmental & Sustainability Advisor (North East / East Midlands)

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  8783

About the role

Lead environmental excellence at scale. Shape the future of offshore infrastructure.

Join National Grid at one of the most exciting moments in UK infrastructure. As part of The Great Grid Upgrade, we’re delivering critical offshore projects – and this is your opportunity to lead environmental excellence at scale.

As a Senior Environmental & Sustainability Advisor, you’ll play a visible, influential role across our most complex offshore programmes. You’ll ensure projects are delivered safely, compliantly and sustainably – embedding best practice from early design through to construction.

Aligned to Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) and Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3), you’ll work across the North East and East Midlands – combining site, office and hybrid working to stay close to delivery and impact, with regular travel to Glasgow.

What you'll be doing

You’ll lead from the front – setting standards, influencing decisions and driving consistent best practice across projects.

  • Lead environmental management systems and sustainability strategy across offshore programmes
  • Embed sustainability into day-to-day delivery – ensuring it’s built in, not bolted on
  • Provide leadership and direction to Environmental & Sustainability Advisors and SHES teams
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, licences and contractual requirements
  • Act as a trusted subject matter expert across internal teams, regulators and partners
  • Deliver assurance, reporting and performance insights aligned to regulatory expectations
  • Shape supply chain standards – supporting procurement, contracts and compliance
  • Provide expert support during environmental incidents and champion a strong SHES culture
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement and sustainability opportunities across the portfolio

What we're looking for

You'll bring credibility, leadership and a clear passion for delivering infrastructure responsibly.

  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, management systems and sustainable delivery
  • Proven ability to influence across complex, multi-stakeholder environments
  • Experience leading, mentoring and developing E&S professionals
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a drive for continuous improvement
  • Confident communicator with the ability to engage regulators, partners and project teams
  • Highly organised, delivery-focused and comfortable working across multiple priorities
  • ISEP (or equivalent) membership desirable
  • Full UK driving licence required

Why this role matters

Offshore infrastructure is critical to the UK’s energy future – but how we deliver it matters just as much.

In this role, you’ll ensure:

  • Environmental risks are effectively managed and mitigated
  • Sustainability commitments translate into real project impact
  • Projects deliver a positive, lasting environmental legacy

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £61,000 - £70,000 – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a job requirement company car, a bonus based on personal performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
