About the role

 

At National Grid, we’re building a cleaner, greener energy future and working towards net zero by 2050. As a SHE Advisor, you’ll play a key role in supporting our regional delivery teams to achieve world‑class safety, health, environmental and quality performance.

 

You’ll provide expert SHE advice across construction projects, coaching and influencing managers, staff and contractors to ensure legal compliance, strong risk management and continuous improvement, with a particular focus on behavioural safety. Acting as a trusted subject matter expert, you’ll support Construction Safety Management, CDM requirements, contractor assurance and the implementation of project quality and environmental plans.

 

You’ll lead and support accident and incident investigations, sharing learning and driving improvement, while also delivering briefings, training and health, safety and sustainability initiatives. The role includes providing independent audit and assurance, supporting tender and contract processes, monitoring contractor competence, and producing monthly SHE performance data and reports.

 

This role covers the North East of England and North Wales, with time split between site visits across the region, home working and the office.

 

 

What you'll need

 

You’ll bring experience from a similar role within a high‑risk environment, ideally supporting large construction or engineering projects. Experience within the energy sector would be advantageous.

 

You’ll also have:

 

  • A recognised health & safety qualification, such as NEBOSH Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, or equivalent.
  • HNC/D level in an engineering or construction‑related discipline, or relevant experience.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Strong knowledge of construction health & safety legislation, behavioural safety and CDM Regulations.
  • Experience in auditing, root cause analysis and incident investigation.
  • Good IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach, influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • The ability to develop and deliver effective training and briefings.
