National Grid is hiring for a Project Engineer - HVDC Cables (Engineering)
This role is variable based. You will be expected to travel to multiple operational and delivery sites and locations throughout your working week based on project demands. The projects we are currently recruiting for are based within North Wales and Lincolnshire.
Job Purpose
Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure is undergoing a vital transformation as we move towards a cleaner, greener, net‑zero energy system. At National Grid Electricity Transmission, we are delivering a major programme of HVDC infrastructure, with cable systems playing a critical role across subsea, land and converter station interfaces.
As a Project Engineer – HVDC Cables, you will provide specialist technical expertise across the full engineering lifecycle — from early concept and specification through to testing and handover. Acting as the project‑level technical focal point, you will help ensure HVDC cable systems are designed, integrated and delivered to the highest standards of safety, quality and long‑term performance.
You’ll support major strategic infrastructure projects including Eastern Green Link 5 and Western Link, contributing to the development of robust cable engineering capability that underpins the successful delivery of a complex onshore and offshore transmission portfolio.
What you'll do
- Provide technical oversight for HVDC cable systems (land, subsea and transition interfaces), with a focus on electrical engineering
- Develop and review technical specifications, design requirements and employer standards for HVDC cable systems
- Review and support assurance of OEM and contractor design submissions, including:
- Electrical and thermal cable design
- Insulation systems and ratings
- Jointing and termination concepts
- Interfaces with converter stations and substations
- Manage key technical interfaces between HVDC cables and converter stations, civil works, sealing ends and system requirements
- Support procurement activities, including technical evaluations, tender clarifications and scope definition
- Identify and manage technical risks (thermal, interface, lifetime and performance risks)
- Contribute to testing and commissioning activities, including PQT, FAT and commissioning assurance
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, internal SMEs and external partners to enable integrated engineering delivery
About you
- Experience in HVDC or high‑voltage cable system engineering, gained within a TSO, OEM, consultancy or EPC environment
- Strong technical grounding in cable system design principles (electrical, thermal and interface considerations)
- Experience reviewing technical designs and supplier documentation, applying sound engineering judgement
- Understanding of how design impacts manufacturing, installation, testing and long‑term asset performance
- Confident communicator, able to engage effectively across multiple stakeholders and disciplines
- A proactive, risk‑based approach to engineering, with a strong focus on quality and safety
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £65,000 – £78,000 dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
