About us

National Grid is hiring for a Project Engineer - HVDC Control & Protection (Engineering)
This role is Variable Based. You will be expected to travel to multiple operational and delivery sites and locations throughout your working week based on project demands. The projects we are currently recruiting for are based within North Wales and Lincolnshire.
Job Purpose
Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure is undergoing a vital transformation to enable a cleaner, greener, net‑zero energy system. As the network evolves to accommodate increasing volumes of offshore wind and a more power‑electronics‑dominated grid, HVDC Control & Protection (C&P) systems are essential to maintaining system stability, resilience and safety.
As a Project Engineer – HVDC Control & Protection, you will play a key role in strengthening National Grid’s capability in this specialist area while supporting the delivery of major HVDC infrastructure projects.
Working within multi‑disciplinary project teams, you’ll provide technical expertise and assurance across the full lifecycle of HVDC converter C&P systems — from early design and specification through to testing, commissioning and energisation. You’ll support critical projects including Eastern Green Link 5 and Western Link.
What you'll do
- Act as the project level technical specialist for HVDC Control & Protection systems
- Support the review and assurance of C&P system architectures, philosophies and functional requirements
- Coordinate key technical interfaces between HVDC C&P systems and:
- Converter valves and power electronics
- AC protection and substation automation systems
- Telecoms, SCADA and control room systems
- Review OEM design documentation, including control philosophies, protection schemes and test plans
- Support compliance with National Grid standards, Grid Code, SQSS and cyber/security requirements
- Contribute to design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP studies, technical risk assessments and change management
- Provide engineering assurance during FAT, site testing, commissioning and energisation
- Work closely with system studies teams, operational engineers and OEMs to ensure stable and robust system performance
About you
- Experience working with control, protection or automation systems within HVDC, FACTS or high‑voltage transmission environments
- Good understanding of HVDC Control & Protection concepts, including converter controls, protection functions, fault response and system interactions
- Experience reviewing control philosophies, protection schemes, logic diagrams or functional specifications
- Knowledge of testing and commissioning processes for complex control systems
- Comfortable working in multi‑disciplinary, multi‑stakeholder project environments
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage in detailed, technical discussions.
- A proactive approach to safety, quality and engineering assurance.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £65,000 – £78,000 dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
