Project Engineer

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  9663

About us

The British Energy Security Strategy set out the Government’s ambition to connect up to 50GW of offshore generation to the electricity network by 2030.

At National Grid, we connect homes and businesses to power, ensuring supply and demand are balanced every second of every day. From schools and hospitals to sporting arenas, we keep the lights on for millions across the UK. Through our investment in Strategic Infrastructure and the Great Grid Upgrade, we are enabling more home-grown energy, strengthening energy security and supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future.

We’re currently hiring multiple Project Engineers to support the engineering delivery of major HVDC infrastructure projects down the East Coast and in North Wales. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in some of the UK’s most significant energy infrastructure programmes. The role offers hybrid working, with regular travel required across project locations, and we’re happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to support your work-life balance.

Job Purpose

We are seeking Project Engineers with knowledge or experience in areas such as converter stations, control and protection systems, civil engineering, cable systems, substations, telecommunications and associated enabling works.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will support Engineering Managers and Subject Matter Experts in coordinating engineering activities, managing technical interfaces, reviewing project information, tracking risks and actions, and helping to ensure engineering outputs are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. This is a broad, project-facing engineering role, ideal for someone who enjoys working across technical disciplines, organising complex information, supporting assurance activities and helping turn engineering challenges into clear, actionable solutions.

What You'll Do

As a Project Engineer, you will support Engineering Managers in the day-to-day coordination and assurance of major infrastructure projects, ensuring engineering activities are visible, aligned and progressing effectively.

For Projects in Development

  • Support engineering input into procurement and tender activities, including the collation of technical information, lessons learned, survey assumptions, design maturity evidence and supplier clarification responses.
  • Assist with preparation for market engagement activities, supplier meetings, design briefings and technical evaluation processes.
  • Support the review of contractor, consultant, OEM and joint venture partner documentation, ensuring comments are captured, tracked and closed out in line with project requirements.
  • Coordinate engineering responses relating to Development Consent Orders (DCO), consenting, planning, environmental, operational and construction-related matters where technical input is required.

For Projects in Delivery

  • Coordinate engineering inputs across multiple disciplines, including civil, structural, cable, converter, control and protection, telecommunications, marine, commissioning, operations and asset management teams.
  • Support Engineering Managers and Subject Matter Experts in preparing and facilitating design reviews, technical workshops, HAZID/HAZOP sessions, constructability reviews, design assurance reviews and governance meetings.
  • Identify, record and escalate engineering risks, issues, assumptions, interfaces and dependencies, particularly where they may impact programme, safety, cost, quality, consenting or future operability.
  • Ensure engineering reviews are completed at the appropriate stages, with clear ownership of actions, approvals and residual risks.

Across the Full Project Lifecycle

  • Work with Engineering Managers and technical specialists to capture lessons learned and embed them into future specifications, procedures, tender requirements and ways of working.
  • Prepare concise engineering updates, briefing notes, meeting records, presentations and governance papers for project leadership teams.
  • Promote collaboration across engineering, project delivery, construction, procurement, commercial, operations, asset management, joint venture partners and external suppliers.

About You

You will be an engineer or technically minded project professional who thrives in a complex, multidisciplinary environment. While you won’t be expected to be the technical authority across every discipline, you will be organised, inquisitive, collaborative and confident in engaging with technical discussions and driving actions through to completion.

You'll Bring

  • Experience working within engineering, infrastructure, utilities, energy, electricity transmission, construction, manufacturing, consultancy, EPC, OEM or major project environments.
  • A good understanding of engineering delivery across the full project lifecycle, including development, design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning and handover.
  • The ability to work across organisational boundaries, recognise where specialist expertise is required and bring together the right people to resolve issues.
  • The ability to coordinate technical information across a range of disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills, with experience managing actions, risks, interfaces, comments, decisions and document review processes.
  • Experience of electrical engineering projects is desirable but not essential.
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical schedules, design reports, interface documents and project plans.
  • A proactive approach to safety, quality, risk management, collaboration and continuous improvement.

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £54,000 - £66,000 per annum, dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
