Marine Superintendent

Job Purpose

The Strategic Infrastructure (SI) business unit has been established to deliver National Grid’s new transmission projects in the UK and has been allocated five HVDC subsea cable interconnector’s projects which are now under contract and ready to start construction. In the coming decade we will install over 3000km of HVDC subsea cable which will provide us with the largest offshore cable network in Europe, to do this we need to build a world-class organisation, and we are looking for talented and skilled people to lead the delivery of this big work.  

We are hiring for a Marine Superintendent who will work for our central engineering function and shall be responsible for establishing and running a marine coordination centre, and for leading a team of technical experts that specialize in the coordination of marine construction activities around the coast of the UK. Travel across UK sites such as Warwick, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow will be required for this role. We’re happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to make this role work for you.

What You'll Do

• Lead the development and implementation of Phase 1 of National Grid’s Marine Coordination Centre, providing central oversight of vessel operations associated with the construction of National Grid’s HVDC submarine cable network.
• Ensure the Marine Coordination Centre delivers the following core functions:
• Maintain safe marine operations through comprehensive situational awareness of all marine activities taking place across the HVDC network.
• Provide personnel tracking, safety monitoring, and security oversight for all National Grid personnel undertaking offshore activities.
• Coordinate and manage structured emergency response arrangements in the event of a marine incident.
• Deliver consistent and reliable weather forecasting and metocean analysis services to support project operations.
• Support the scoping and development of Phase 2 of the Marine Coordination Function, focused on providing security, resilience, and operational oversight for the in-service submarine cable network throughout its operational lifecycle.
• Develop and maintain an integrated portfolio-level marine operations programme by consolidating individual project construction schedules to provide accurate forecasting and visibility of planned marine activities.
• Maintain comprehensive records of all marine operations undertaken on behalf of National Grid, including the production of reports detailing completed activities and the as-laid positions of HVDC subsea cable assets.
• Provide second-line assurance by monitoring contractor compliance with relevant consent conditions, regulatory obligations, and third-party crossing agreements.
• Deliver second-line assurance to support the safe execution of offshore works, ensuring contractor compliance with approved marine procedures and National Grid’s vessel assurance requirements.
• Act as a senior representative for National Grid, developing and managing strategic relationships with key marine stakeholders, including the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Joint Maritime Security Centre (JMSC), Statutory Port Authorities, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), and fisheries industry bodies.
• Provide marine subject matter expertise to support SHES-led marine incident and accident investigations where required.
• Support project teams in the development of employer technical requirements for marine operations and contribute to the evaluation of bidder proposals and solutions during procurement processes.

About You

Interpersonal, Supervisory or Management

• You shall have effective people management and communication skills with experience in leading a dispersed multi-disciplined team.
• You shall possess excellent stakeholder management skills and be comfortable representing National Grid when meeting with maritime authorities and government organisations.

Technical or Specialist

• This role would be suited to an individual who has recently held an onshore leadership position in the defence or merchant maritime sectors and will require that you also have sea-going experience having reached the rank of Master, First Officer or Chief Engineer.
• You shall have a strong working knowledge of Maritime Law and Regulation and of the planning and execution of marine operations within UK waters.
• You must be an excellent verbal and written communicator with the ability to evaluate complex information and to act appropriately in high intensity situations.
• In addition to your sea-going skills you must be able to demonstrate a strong project management and offshore construction skillset.
• Must have lived in the UK for the last 5 years to be able to pass national security vetting (NSV).

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £80,000 - £90,000 per annum, dependent on capability.
