Lead Quantity Surveyor

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  12727

About us

The British Energy Security Strategy set out the Government’s ambition to connect up to 50GW of offshore generation to the electricity network by 2030. Delivering this ambition requires significant reinforcement of the onshore electricity transmission network and National Grid Strategic Infrastructure is leading the way.

At National Grid, we connect homes and businesses to power, ensuring supply and demand are balanced every second of every day. From schools and hospitals to sporting arenas, we keep the lights on for millions of people across the UK.

We are recruiting for a Lead Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team supporting the Bramford to Twinstead (BTNO) Project. The BTNO project is an upgrade to the electricity transmission network between Bramford substation in Suffolk and Twinstead Tee in Essex, through the construction of a new overhead line and underground cable. You will be required to travel at least 3 days a week to project sites across Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury. We’re happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to make this role work for you.

What You'll Do

  • You’ll support procurement activities associated with the packages/sub-projects (over £100m) and with support from the Commercial Manager, act as the key commercial representative providing guidance on commercial and contract management considerations and advising on contract options and budget estimates, including risk & contingency allowances.
  • You’ll be responsible for the quality assurance of construction contracts, including maintaining accurate contractor data records, providing commercial and contract management support, guidance and coaching to the project delivery team and ensure contractor costs are robustly managed across your package.
  • You’ll ensure contract compliance through effective contract management activities including monitoring of spend against agreed budgets, KPIs and other metrics. Helping your project team develop and maintain cost forecasts will be a key responsibility.
  • You’ll produce all necessary contract forms such as valuations and payment recommendations and instructions and communications for the assigned project, leading on providing independent reviews and advice on variations and compensation events, supporting any escalation procedures and dispute avoidance and resolution processes.
  • You’ll build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including Project Managers, Planners, Accountants, Operational colleagues and other specialists, contractors, and colleagues in procurement, regulation and legal teams, reaching out to senior stakeholders for assistance when it is needed.
