As Lead Policy Engineer, you will act as the technical authority for High Voltage Safety Rules across the transmission network, taking overall responsibility for defining and governing safe systems of work for operational staff and contractors. You will be central to the SCADA upgrade programme, shaping innovative ways of working for field-based teams, while having direct access to senior stakeholders across all organisational levels to influence critical safety and governance decisions. The role also offers opportunities to drive innovation, including AI-enabled solutions. This role is flexible on location in England or Wales and hybrid working a mix of home, office and site.
High Voltage Safety Rules are essential to maintaining operational integrity across National Grid Electricity Transmission. In this role, you will take strategic ownership of the governance framework that manages high voltage electrical hazards on NGET sites and routes, ensuring policies are technically accurate, complete, and fully compliant with regulations. You will identify policy requirements arising from operational, regulatory, or system changes and translate them into clear, implementable guidance. Leading consultation and revision activity, you will project manage implementation and ensure effective adoption across operational teams. Regular site engagement across England and Wales will ensure that policies remain practical and aligned with live operational environments.
Collaboration is a core part of this role: you will work closely with DNOs, generators, contractors, and internal assurance functions to ensure robust and coordinated application of HV Safety Rules. You will also influence training standards through engagement with the National Grid Academy, shaping the technical competency of teams across the organisation.
Requirements:
- Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in Engineering or Health & Safety discipline.
- Experienced drafting engineering or safety policy.
- NEBOSH qualified (or working towards).
- Demonstrate strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- Project management capability.
Pay and Benefits
- Salary £61,416 to £70,000 pa + Bonus (2025 up to 4%) + Job requirement Company car (Electric or Hybrid).
- 37 Hours per week Monday to Friday - 26 Days leave plus 8 statutory days
- An excellent contribution pension scheme – max total up to 18%.
