National Grid is hiring a Development Director- This role requires a hybrid working approach with a mix of home, site and office working.
Job Purpose
Overall responsibility for the management and timely delivery of all Customer Connection offers and progression of customer projects through development cycle. Ensuring technical solutions are provided to the relevant standards, investment progress is aligned to our customers timeline and management of the pre-construction portfolio is delivered to cost and programme, delivering exceptional customer service whilst assuring regulatory assurance.
What You'll Do
- Responsibility for the early project lifecycle up to project sanction to ensure all engineering activities are carried out across the portfolio, to ensure successful, timely completion and handover to Investment Delivery.
- Responsibility for the appropriate monitoring, control and data associated with all investments within the portfolio, providing accurate and timely financial forecasting information to support customer securities, regulatory reporting and the business and capital plan.
- Responsible for driving a safety culture to achieve and uphold the highest levels of Health & Safety, actively embedding Safety by Design into our engineering solutions
- Determine a clear approach to regulatory alignment of the investments, ensuring time and best value solutions for NGET, Customers and Consumers (via OFGEM).
- Provide oversight and mitigate all project risks, taken personal action to ensure portfolio level risks are adequately understood and mitigated.
- Ensure that the portfolio is “set up” for delivery, aligning across NGET critical functions from Design Assurance, Asset Operations site and securing the necessary outage and resource to enable onward completion of the project.
- Drive lessons learnt and seek opportunities to enhance our service provision to customers, managing the supply chain to achieve deliverables, challenging the status quo and seeking opportunities to standardise, reduce cost and accelerate connections into NGET.
- Provide senior level sign-off for Major Projects/LRR projects, with appropriate level of technical and commercial challenge ensuring that projects are developed in line with the Network Development Policy.
- Responsibility for managing a responsive service into our business, ensuring that engagement with customers from initial concept through to the provision of timely updates.
- Responsible for the recruitment, development, coaching and performance of the team.
- Ensure that best practise is developed and shared across CC and wider ET, ensuring consistency for our customers, actively embrace innovation and drive a culture of engineering excellence in the solutions we provide.
- Responsible for providing external support and guidance to strategically important customers and stakeholders, building relationships to understand their intent and help define the right technical solution and timescales for all parties.
About You
- Proficient technical knowledge of the Electricity Transmission System and the primary transmission assets, including knowledge of the NETS and Power Systems Concepts.
- Clear understanding of the RIIO funding mechanism and the way National Gird delivers revenue under the regulatory framework
- Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline with a considerable breadth and depth of proven experience in construction project, programme and contract management, CDM, Safety and Environmental Regulations.
- Significant experience working at a senior level within a construction / utilities environment. Executive experience leading large, complex programmes of work, enabling engineering teams to operate innovatively, effectively and efficiently.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and influencing large, devolved teams, and gaining support and commitment from a wider operational group.
- Customer management experience, able to influence customers and partner organisations.
- Relationship management experience, driving engineering value and performance through major contracts
- Experience of leading change and business improvement within a complex organisation/programme or project.

A competitive salary between £74,000 – £100,000 dependent on capability
