About The Role

As a SHES Advisor you’ll provide Safety, Health, Environment and Sustainability (SHES) support to Strategic Infrastructure projects. You’ll coach, advise, train, motivate, inspire and encourage managers, staff and contractors to deliver legislative compliance and promote continuous improvement. Helping to create, achieve and sustain world class Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) performance, you’ll also support the effective implementation, coordination, execution and monitoring of all aspects of Quality Assurance, ensuring compliance with all relevant ISO standards, NG policies, procedures, specifications, and wider National Grid management systems.
As a source of expertise on HSE you’ll provide specialist advice on CDM, Environmental Management, legislation and industry standards. Driving the implementation of the company strategy to enable responsibility and accountability to reside with line managers and staff, with emphasis on behavioural safety.
Supporting Strategic Infrastructure, you’ll develop and implement sustainable working solutions, with an aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the business and projects, supporting the energy transition and corporate plans towards net zero.
This role will predominantly be based between our 2 SeaLink sites with supplier and home working as decided too.

Interpersonal, Supervisory or Management
- Good inter-personal skills with proven skills in coaching and motivating people.
- Ability to communicate and influence effectively at all organisational levels (including Senior Managers).
- Ability to recommend preventative action, develop new initiatives and co-ordinate or ensure their implementation.
- Ability to develop & deliver training/briefing material in an innovative, enjoyable but effective way.
- Ability to identify and assess patterns of resistance and effective problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates determination to achieve business goals despite opposition and displays personal commitment.
Technical or Specialist
- Thorough knowledge of HSE legislation and behavioural safety programs with 3+ years’ experience working in a similar construction HSE role.
- Seen as an expert with a great understanding and working knowledge of CDM Regulations with demonstrable experience managing interfaces between contractors, working with duty holders, and ensuring compliance.
- Good knowledge or awareness of National Grid policies, procedures, processes, and specifications, particularly how projects are delivered in the construction phase.
- Experienced in the development and implementation of robust assurance programs for HSE in construction.
- Seen as a leader and expert on defined safety and health issues.
- Experienced in auditing and root cause analysis techniques.
- Experienced in the management and review of Contract documentation and awareness of Professional Services Framework Contracts.
- Experience in conducting multi-level incident investigations and report writing skills. Including abilities in root cause analysis and preventative mitigation planning

What You'll Do
You will:
- Support the implementation and delivery of company SHES strategies Strategic Infrastructure projects.
- Provide CDM expertise and advice to the project, working to manage interfaces and ensure that statutory compliance is achieved.
- Provide a single point of contact for advice and expertise on HSE management. To ensure the effectiveness of the Construction Phase Plans, Construction Environmental Management and sustainability strategies during the lifecycle of the project.
- Encourage the adoption of best practice initiatives and look for opportunities to make HSE improvements.
- Provide appropriate SHES input into the tender and contract award process, including review of the QA, materials, and process safety engineering aspects.
- Support accident / incident investigations to establish root causes, providing expert advice, support and guidance on legal framework and communicate learning points.
- Actively engage, coach, and positively influence staff, managers and contractors on SHES performance and risk management to promote a positive HSE culture across Strategic Infrastructure.
- Liaise with Principal Contractors to ensure the preparation and implementation SHES management systems and arrangements.
- Liaise with the Principal Designer, to ensure the preparation and implementation design risk reviews, along with the collation of the pre-construction information, to ensure fulfilment of Duty Holders responsibilities.
- Provide independent HSE Assurance advice and audit capability to Strategic Infrastructure Project Teams through design, pre-construction & construction, testing & commissioning phases.
- Ensure suitable controls and processes are in place for the development and ongoing management of the CDM Risk Register.
- Assist the project leads with the review of contractor’s competence and identification of Health and Safety training needs.
- Provide monthly SHES data / statistics to line management as needed.
- Plan and implement site assurance programme for projects on a risk-based approach.
- Provide input into the development, review and implementation of NG policies, procedures and specifications as required and promote best practice and lessons learned.
- Liaise with the wider construction industry to ensure that lessons are shared and implemented.
- Provide support to the EPC PMs and Project Supervisors in expediting the timely close out of notified defects and by challenging the Contractors Quality Management System to drive through contractual compliance and continual improvement.
- Develop relations and networks between TO’s and other members of project teams outside of the parent organisation.
What You'll Get
A competitive starting salary of £55,000 - £68,000 plus other L7 benefits.
