Associate Contract Officer

Business Unit:  Strategic Infrastructure
Requisition Number:  10149

About us

The British Energy Security Strategy set out the Government's ambition to connect up to 50GW of offshore generation to the electricity network by 2030. Delivering this ambition requires significant reinforcement of the onshore electricity transmission network, and National Grid Strategic Infrastructure is leading the way.

At National Grid, we connect homes and businesses to power, ensuring supply and demand are balanced every second of every day. From schools and hospitals to sporting arenas, we keep the lights on for millions of people across the UK.

Through our investment in Strategic Infrastructure and the Great Grid Upgrade, we are enabling more home-grown energy, strengthening energy security, and supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future.

We're currently recruiting for an Associate Contract Officer to join our Strategic Infrastructure Commercial team. This role offers hybrid working, with travel to sites across Birmingham and the East Midlands. We are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to help make this role work for you.

Job Purpose

As an Associate Contract Officer, you'll support the Commercial Manager and Contract Officers in managing the contractual relationship with one or more Delivery Vehicle contractors.

You'll help deliver a comprehensive contract management service, working closely with contractors and internal stakeholders to monitor performance, drive continuous improvement, and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your contract management capability, with the potential to take ownership of a small portfolio of contractors while contributing to the safe, efficient and cost-effective delivery of National Grid's capital programme.

What You'll Do

  • Support the management of contractor relationships, helping to ensure contractual obligations and performance requirements are achieved.
  • Work alongside Quantity Surveyors to provide challenge and review of project costs through benchmarking and cost assurance activities.
  • Support the application of commercial, contractual and financial processes, ensuring compliance across the contract portfolio.
  • Assist in developing cost reduction and performance improvement initiatives with contracting partners to drive value and efficiency.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of reporting frameworks that measure contractor performance consistently across all contracts.
  • Analyse and communicate contractor performance trends and insights to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance benchmarking tools and contract management processes to support continuous improvement.
  • Provide contract management support, advice, guidance and training to Project Delivery teams and contracting partners where required.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to help resolve issues and improve performance across multiple projects.

About You

We're looking for someone who is proactive, commercially aware and able to build strong working relationships across a variety of teams and stakeholders.

You'll bring:

  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience of working across multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with contracts, contract administration or commercial processes.
  • Good commercial acumen, with an understanding of procurement and supply chain principles.
  • The ability to demonstrate initiative, sound judgement and strong problem-solving skills.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, with the confidence to suggest and implement new ideas and approaches.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to analyse and present information clearly.
  • Knowledge of the Electricity Transmission industry or wider utilities/infrastructure sector would be ideal but not essential.
  • Experience working within large capital projects, construction or infrastructure environments is ideal but not essential.

What You'll Get

A competitive salary of £42,000 – £46,000 per annum, depending on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
