Job Purpose
The New York Major Projects Team drives project management for major electric capital construction projects, leading the clean energy transformation and significant portfolio growth at National Grid. Projects include multi-year large-scale transmission line, distribution line, and substation construction projects. The dedicated Principal Project Manager will oversee and drive major electric capital construction projects, ensuring safe delivery within budget, schedule, and scope.
Key Accountabilities
- Drive and manage all aspects of assigned project(s) including:
- Communications;
- Team leadership;
- Sign off on and deliver to approved scope, cost estimate, schedule and resource plan;
- Control of project scope, cost, quality and schedule parameters/risk management;
- Compliance with environmental, safety and National Grid standards and policies;
- Acquisition of required permits, licenses and land rights;
- Engineering and design deliverables;
- Contracted services, equipment and material procurement and administration;
- Construction, interface with operations, and commissioning;
- Close activities with project acceptance; and
- Provide project status reports to team members and stakeholders.
- Foster and promote a culture of inter-department efficiency, teamwork, and collaboration across the organization.
- Provide project management consulting and expertise for peers within the Engineering & Design groups. Seek and promote ‘best practices’ approach to project management within the team and work group.
- Drive best in class strategic, critical, and complex electrical capital construction projects in National Grid’s New York electric region ensuring safe delivery, within budget and on schedule.
- Lead project strategy and update presentations to senior leadership.
- Drive continuous improvement of project management processes, methodologies, and tools.
- Own decisions in risk management including calculated risks and outcomes.
- Drive project compliance with internal Business Management System (BMS) for major projects.
- Mentor junior project managers.
- Provide emergency storm restoration support during weather events.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and/or significant relevant project management, engineering and construction experience in all aspects of utility substation/line construction operations.
- Master’s degree in engineering or MBA preferred.
- 10+ years experience within the electric utility sector in complex project management, engineering, contracts, construction, or operations.
- 10+ years of detailed project financial forecasting and reporting.
- 10+ years of managing, coaching, and leading teams in a matrix organization.
- Ability to present complex information to executive leadership.
- Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative, integrity and ability to interact with company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.
- Knowledge of power system operations, electrical and civil engineering, environmental, engineering economics, and familiarity with legal, purchasing, and utility accounting regulations.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints. Bottom-line oriented, budget-conscious, metric/measurement driven, and proactive manager of project cost forecast with great attention to detail.
- Ability to create a high energy team climate whereby team members are able to discuss relevant issues freely and where there is a strong emphasis on continuous improvement.
- Strong skills in: negotiations, presentation, construction management, interpersonal & written communication, cost forecasting, stakeholder management, and critical analysis.
- Exhibit high personal standards of commitment and integrity.
- Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred.
- Professional Engineer license (PE) preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy (e.g., must not have more than one traffic violation in the last year and/or more than one motor vehicle accident within the past three years.) required.

Salary: $140,000.00 - $165,000.00 USD
This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
