National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you’ll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

About the Position

As an Associate Engineer in Telecommunications and Network Engineering, you’ll dive into the specification, design, and implementation of cutting-edge solutions for our electric distribution and sub-transmission systems. Your main responsibilities will include evaluating emerging technologies, participating in equipment selection, and designing end-to-end communication systems. Ready to innovate and make an impact? This is a hybrid role based in Syracuse, NY.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll be involved in a variety of tasks that will help you grow professionally. Here’s what you’ll be up to:

 

  • Engineering Tasks: Perform routine engineering work using standard techniques and procedures to carry out your tasks effectively.
  • Learning & Development: Complete assignments designed to build your professional knowledge and abilities while being guided by experienced engineers.
  • Resource Management: Execute instructions, plan and organize resources, and ensure that work is carried out efficiently and aligns with company policies.
  • Collaboration: Actively engage with our IT and third-party communications partners to develop end-to-end communication solutions.
  • Professional Networking: Build and nurture relationships with industry peers and external influencers to stay updated on technical innovations and their potential benefits.
  • Storm Support: Assist with storm restoration efforts in addition to your regular job duties, helping to keep our systems running smoothly.

 

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor or Master’s in Electrical or Computer Engineering degree from an ABET accredited institution    
  • Graduated between May 2025 and June 2026   
  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 8, 2026, or July 13, 2026
  • Valid driver’s license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization) 

 

It would be awesome if you had

  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam
  • Network and telecommunications engineering experience or coursework

Salary Range

Syracuse, NY $87,000 - $102,000 a year

 

 

You must reside within our existing footprint, which includes contiguous states (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Our hybrid working approach applies to all colleagues who have a role which has the flexibility to be done hybrid across the National Grid group. Operational requirements mean that not all roles are suitable for hybrid working. Managers are responsible for determining whether a role is conducive to hybrid working. A hybrid worker should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to their assigned primary office.
