Job Purpose
The Manager of New Technology and Climate Resilience for National Grid New York plays a key leadership role in identifying, evaluating, and recommending new technologies that support strategic business priorities. This position also oversees the development of our plans to mitigate and adapt to severe weather and climate hazards to maintain a resilient electric transmission and distribution system.
In this role, the manager will lead a team of engineers focused on National Grid’s upstate New York electric business. The new technology team is responsible for leading new technology pilots and developing associated recommendation reports. They are also responsible for leading our engagement with R&D industry groups (EPRI & CEATI), JU working groups (ATWG), and with universities, national labs, and other industry groups to support relevant industry research. The climate resilience engineer is responsible for supporting updates related to our NY Climate Change Resilience Plan and supporting the development and implementation of resilience metrics.
Key Accountabilities

Lead and manage the New Technology team to support and advance the adoption of new technology withing the NY electric business.

Maintain and update the process for identifying, vetting, implementing, and tracking new technology pilots.

Lead and manage efforts to mitigate the risk posed by extreme weather and changes in climate to maintain the resilience of the NY electric business.

Meet all regulatory requirements and associated deadlines including for the annual NY R&D report filing, and Climate Resilience requirements such as biannual climate resilience working group meetings, biennial updates on the implementation of our climate change resilience plan (CCRP) and updated CCRP filing every 5 years.

Oversee the review, vetting, and tracking of proposed support agreements for research conducted by universities, national labs and other industry groups.

Oversee the coordination and tracking and grant applications by National Grid from organizations such as NYSERDA and the DOE.

Lead engagement with National Grid Partners (NGP) to identify startups with novel offerings that we may benefit from evaluating and piloting.

Oversee engagement with the NY Advanced Technology Working Group (ATWG).

Manage US engagement with Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Centre for Energy Advancement through Technological Innovation (CEATI) to ensure we select programs to fund that will provide the greatest benefit to National Grid.

Collaborate with other National Grid groups and departments to identify areas where new technologies are likely to provide the greatest benefits.

Collaborate with industry groups and electric utility peers to identify best practices for the identification, evaluation, and adoption of new technology and other innovative practices.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field is required; advanced degree preferred.

Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in utility engineering roles involving technology and innovation required.

Strong knowledge of electric distribution and transmission systems and regulatory environment in New York required.

Experience with evaluating and implementing new technologies to address problems, improve grid performance and support the energy transition required.

Experience in project management, risk management and asset management preferred.

Professional Engineering (P.E.) license preferred.

Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.

Ability to think strategically and make a compelling case to adopt new, innovative technologies and approaches.

Takes personal responsibility for correcting problems promptly and non-defensively communicates Company engineering expectations to monitor delivery of engineering projects and satisfaction.

Proactively makes changes to improve performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of processes; for example, challenge existing engineering procedures and highlight areas for improvement.

Strong analytical, project management, and communication skills.

Familiarity with industry standards (ANSI, IEEE), and industry groups (EPRI, CEATI) preferred.

Experience in change management, especially leading dynamic teams that regularly go through substantial responsibility changes preferred.

More Information
Salary: $161,000 - $189,000 per year
