About us
National Grid is hiring an Engineer, Gas Asset Engineering for our Gas organization in Syracuse, NY.
This is a hybrid position with in-person, remote, and field work locations as needed.
Job Purpose
This engineer will contribute to the safe and reliable operation of 1200+ miles of natural gas transmission pipelines as part of our Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP).
Engineers in this role will gain valuable experience in one of the most dynamic and technically satisfying areas of the pipeline industry while directly impacting pipeline safety in their community. The main responsibilities for this team include managing projects, evaluating data, coordinating and overseeing investigation digs, performing engineering analysis, and engineering repairs of pipeline defects.
Engineers at this level are expected to perform with moderate oversight and direction from supervision or more experienced engineers.
Key Accountabilities
- Manage projects to perform integrity assessments of gas transmission pipelines through in-line inspection and direct assessment.
- Review integrity assessment data and develop response plans.
- Plan, coordinate, and support all aspects of integrity dig execution, including construction field supervision as needed.
- Perform direct inspection of pipeline flaws and provide engineering support for non-destructive testing technicians.
- Analyze integrity related issues to determine appropriate mitigations.
- Review third-party construction plans within the company right-of-way and communicate damage prevention requirements.
- Consistently gain knowledge and develop increasing technical understanding of pipeline integrity topics.
- Able to travel overnight outside of normal work area and work overtime including nights, weekends, holidays for emergencies or other planned projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited engineering school is required. Position aligns closest to Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or Material Science disciplines
- 2+ years of engineering or project management experience
- NYS EIT certificate preferred
- Awareness of relevant industry regulations, codes, and recommended practices is preferred
- Awareness of basic pipeline engineering principles is preferred
- Awareness of GIS (ESRI, ArcGIS) is preferred
- Valid driver’s license required

Upstate NY Salary: $94,000 - $110,000 a year
