Job Purpose

Provide distribution system planning/engineering leadership and governance for the DERMS program, ensuring that DERMS capabilities are designed and deployed in alignment with established distribution system planning, engineering, and operational standards. This role is responsible for defining the system‑level engineering frameworks, assumptions, and guardrails that enable DERMS to be applied safely, reliably, and consistently across the electric grid at scale.

The role represents the distribution planning and engineering function within the DERMS program and ensures that DERMS, as a platform and operating capability, is fully integrated into existing grid engineering practices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Define how DERMS capabilities should be evaluated and applied within existing distribution planning methodologies, engineering standards, and system models.
  • Establish system‑level engineering assumptions, constraints, and guardrails related to voltage, thermal capacity, protection coordination, fault levels, and overall system reliability.
  • Ensure DERMS use cases, operating modes, and control strategies align with distribution system safety, reliability, and performance requirements.
  • Define and maintain distribution engineering standards and technical requirements impacted by DERMS and increasing DER penetration.
  • Ensure alignment between DERMS functionality, DER communications standards, protection schemes, and established grid engineering and operating practices.
  • Provide engineering input to DERMS design, configuration, testing, and validation activities to confirm platform behavior aligns with system‑wide engineering expectations.
  • Identify engineering risks associated with deploying DERMS at scale and define mitigation strategies, constraints, and operational boundaries.
  • Partner closely with DER Comms, Architecture, Product, IT, Security, Operations, and Regulatory teams to embed engineering requirements consistently across the DERMS program.
  • Serve as the primary engineering authority supporting governance, regulatory engagement, and executive decision‑making related to DERMS grid impacts.
  • Ensure engineering frameworks, standards, and assumptions are documented and transitioned effectively into business‑as‑usual operations post‑program.

  • Strong project management, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective collaboration and partnership capabilities.
  • Background in utility service business activities and projects preferred.
