National Grid is hiring a Substation Engineer - This role will be based around the North Manchester area.
Role overview
This role initially is all about the training to start with, although we do require you to have practical engineering skills as per the requirements. You’ll join one of our local regional teams, where you will spend the first 18 – 24 months on a training programme gaining experience on-site and, in the classroom, (with short stays away from home) building your skill base and safety authorisations needed to take the next big step.
Once you are qualified this is when things change. You will move into the Senior Authorised Person (SAP) role with an increase in base salary to £57,163 pa. As a Substation Engineer SAP you’ll lead teams of fitters and contractors on high voltage substation projects ensuring they are set to work in the correct manner, including the provision of risk assessments and method statements, and that toolbox talks take place. Managing, monitoring and reviewing progress on safety critical works. Undertake site delivery activities of projects as the appointed temporary works co-ordinator and principal contractor as defined in CDM regs, and helping keep the UK’s electricity network running smoothly. You’ll also join a standby rota for emergency call outs – earning additional payments for your expertise and availability.

What you'll get
- Starting salary £47,442 to £49,000 pa - while you are in training.
- 37 Hours per week Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm (Days only).
- 26 Days leave plus 8 statutory days, an excellent contribution pension scheme – max total 18%.
- Paid overtime, standby allowance + call out fee + Bonus (2025 up to 4%)

About you
- Minimum NVQ Level 3/ONC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering qualification.
- You have practical industrial engineering skills – installations, breakdown, repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Ability to read schematic electrical drawings, produce risk assessments and method statements.
- Ability to use test equipment and interpret maintenance results.
- You must be able to commit and attend training courses at our Eakring site in Nottinghamshire and other sites which will require short stays away from home to complete your training.
- You will be available for standby rota providing reactive call outs for emergencies, due to this you will live within 45 mins of North Manchester.
- Full UK driving licence.
