As an Optel and Metering Technician you will support the delivery of telecommunications projects across National Grid’s transmission network. You will carry out installations, end-to-end testing, fault diagnosis and rectification, and deployment of additional/ new telecoms services to help ensure the safe and reliable operation of the electricity transmission network. This is a peripatetic role, requiring travel to substations within the region and beyond to support ongoing work.
What you'll do
- Support of Project delivery
- Support the installation of the replacement Operational Telecoms (OpTel) Network
- Enact Project Lead Role
- Installation and testing of new Telecoms/ICT, LAN/WAN services
- Optical and Electrical cabling for new Metering and Telephony installations
- OpTel emergency response and retrospective fault finding and resolution
- Organising supply of equipment, spares and materials for on going work
- Promote and uphold safety standards, ensuring all work follows National Grid procedures, risk assessments, and method statements
- Contribute to meeting Service Level Agreement commitments with customers and stakeholder
About you
Technical or Specialist skills.
- Strong understanding of the technical elements of Telecommunications / ICT systems
- IT Advanced Skills and application to enable a self-reliance approach to common work related problems and Telecom system issues
- Understanding and practical application of LV systems and low voltage skills associated with the installation and ongoing operation of Telecom/ICT systems
- Experience working on fibre and copper cabling systems
- Demonstrated adherence to defined safety processes and procedures
- Effective planning, communication and supervisory skills to lead a working party to efficiently deliver work to challenging timescales
- Demonstrated self-drive and innovation when approaching common work-related problems
- Ability and flexibility to work within remote teams
Academic Qualifications
- STEM GCSE (Minimum Grade C) or equivalent operational telecoms engineering experience
- Full driving licence
- Level 3 Engineering NVQ Qualification or recognised apprenticeship

Salary range between £43,000 and £48,000 p.a dependent on experience , Plus:
