OHL Condition Monitoring Engineer

Business Unit:  Electricity Transmission
Requisition Number:  8229

We’re looking for a passionate OHL Condition Monitoring Engineer to join our Asset Operations Team.

The role leads the delivery of condition monitoring expertise across HV Overhead Line systems, ensuring that asset condition data, monitoring outputs, and insights support safe and resilient system operation, while providing technical leadership across a range of monitoring technologies and line management for Condition Monitoring Technicians. The postholder ensures the consistent quality of high-level visual condition information data, effective deployment of field resources, and robust analysis and assurance of monitoring outputs, while developing technician capability, driving continuous improvement in data quality, and ensuring monitoring activities are aligned with operational, safety, and asset management requirements.

This role is peripatetic, and we encourage a hybrid working approach, although we’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

What You'll Do

  • Manage, support, and develop a team of Condition Monitoring Technicians, setting clear expectations for performance, behaviours, data quality, and compliance.
  • Allocate, plan, and coordinate technician workload, ensuring monitoring tasks (HDCA, steelwork surveys, UAV tasks, and reporting) are delivered safely, accurately, and on time.
  • Provide technical authority and guidance on OHL condition monitoring to ensure consistent interpretation of HDCA, steelwork, UAV and image‑based monitoring outputs.
  • Assure and validate the quality of all technician‑generated data and reports, ensuring traceability, consistency, and engineering confidence.
  • Ensure urgent overhead line defects identified by technicians are escalated and addressed promptly in line with appropriate procedures.
  • Coordinate with National Grid’s UAV Unit, Helicopter Unit, and external representatives to ensure data flows, image quality, and platform performance remain effective.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance technician processes, automate data flows, improve AI‑based interpretation, or standardise reporting to drive consistent quality.
  • Support innovation trials, new technology adoption, and lessons learned activities to increase the value of asset insights.

What You'll Have

  • Level 4 qualification or equivalent relevant industrial experience.
  • Experience in condition monitoring and inspection techniques (HDCA, steelwork, UAV, thermal, LiDAR, sensor‑based, image‑based).
  • Understanding of OHL assets, degradation mechanisms, and risk indicators.
  • Skilled in interpreting complex monitoring datasets and validating multi‑source condition information.
  • Leadership experience, particularly in developing technical staff at early career or technician level.
  • Understanding of ET Operations Policy and transmission safety rules.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 and engineering governance requirements.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly, tailoring messages for technicians, engineers, and stakeholders.

At National Grid, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace for everyone.
