We’re looking for a passionate 4x OHL Chargehand to join our Overheadlines West Team!

 

They are responsible for leading the safety and delivery of all nominated works within their teams, ensuring tasks are planned and executed following safe systems of work developed by Project Leaders and Senior Authorised Persons. They communicate and embed these safety protocols, supervise teams, and promote a generative safety culture through proactive hazard management, continuous improvement, and open safety communication. They also monitor compliance, address safety concerns promptly, and support ongoing training to maintain high safety standards.

 

The ideal candidate would be 1 hour away from any of the following locations:

  • 1x Pentir (LL57 4ED)
  • 1x Swansea (SA5 7PD)
  • 1x Bristol (BS37 9TX)
  • 1x Bushbury (WS10 9UZ)

 

This role is an onsite role, and you’ll be required to travel to other sites.

What You'll Do

  • Enact role as defined in National Grid’s Safety Rules of ‘competent person’, to NSI4,6 & 8.
  • Delivery of planned works, communicating with the project leader/SAP and line manager as appropriate to enable the work schedule to be kept on track and updated to maintain target prioritisation, as necessary.
  • Proactively manage and plan team tasks for work delivery nominating roles within the team dependent on individual skill set and competency, at any one point this could be up to 10 National Grid employees.
  • Adopt an innovative attitude to common work-related problems, utilizing knowledge and experience to resolve any issues that arise, escalating accordingly
  • Proactively work towards eliminating all accidents through implementation of risk assessment techniques, reviewing method statements and being aware of potential hazards reporting all near misses and good catches.
  • Provision of onsite training to facilitate themselves and others to develop enacting the role of mentor when needed.
  • Ensuring compliance with policies, procedures and OHL specifications.
  • Communicate effectively across business functions identifying where issues have occurred and how they can be mitigated moving forwards
  • Ensure public and grantor relations are maintained continuously, looking after National Grids reputation at all times.
  • Provide supervision for both internal and external works (delivery of materials and plant) and record accordingly – AMBP310 auditory system
  • Ensure that materials, equipment and tools are type registered, inspected and calibrated prior to use.

What You'll Have

  • Modern apprenticeship or equivalent, including City & Guilds 232 or relevant NVQ’s, in an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • 5 Years experience within the overhead line sector.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • In depth technical knowledge relating to the electrical, mechanical and general safety aspects of OHL equipment and plant.
  • Lead the team in both aspects of general safety and safety from the system ensuring adherence at all times.
  • Good understanding of OHL design specifications.
  • In depth knowledge of OHL techniques and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of CDM regulations and how compliance is enacted via identified roles within Asset Operations overhead lines (PC rep/ Temp Work Co-ordinator).
  • Good knowledge of legislation related to overhead working tasks – LOLER and PUWER.

What You'll Get

Salary of £45,865 dependent on experience.

 

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
