Development Engineer
Development Engineer
We're looking for a motivated Development Engineer to join our Asset Operations team and play a key role in shaping the future of our network infrastructure.
In this role, you'll lead projects through the early development phases, from initial concept and option selection through to project sanction, tendering and contract award. You'll be responsible for developing practical, cost-effective and safe engineering solutions that support our regulatory obligations while meeting stakeholder and customer requirements.
Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, you'll coordinate project teams during the pre-construction phase, ensuring timely input, alignment and approvals to keep projects progressing efficiently. You'll oversee optioneering and engineering activities to develop solutions that are fit for purpose, deliver best value and drive safely delivered in line with National Grid processes and procedures.
You'll lead the project schemes team throughout the development lifecycle, driving engagement with key stakeholders to secure approvals and ensure projects are ready for successful delivery. A key part of the role will involve developing optimal engineering solutions that balance cost, risk, efficiency and safety, while ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations and SHESQ requirements. You'll also identify, document and manage residual design issues, hazards and project risks throughout the development process.
This 12-month fixed-term opportunity offers the chance to work across a variety of locations and projects, with travel required throughout our operational areas. Alongside a competitive salary, you'll receive a job requirement company car and a £4,500 market supplement.
We support a hybrid approach to working and are committed to providing flexibility where possible. If you have specific working pattern requirements, we'd be happy to discuss these with you as part of the recruitment process.
What You’ll Do:
- Undertake the required site and condition assessments, and support type registration, cost estimation, tendering, contract award, programme & project risk mitigation and innovation activities to enable the delivery vehicle to implement the agreed solution on site.

- Support the tendering process of projects entering delivery, to provide expertise and lead in the production of competent NEC Site and Works Information, and other procurement documentation where relevant.
- Provide leadership as the Client’s Delegated Representative and, where appropriate, fulfil Principal Designer responsibilities under CDM Regulations.
- Ensure that core data for the pre-construction phases for their portfolio of investments is maintained to the highest levels of quality and accuracy.
- Take on board lessons learnt from completed and in-flight investments, including lessons from analysis of compensation events into early investment phases so that the engineered solutions deliver the essential scope at optimal cost.
What You’ll Have:
- Degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of contract management, commercial principles, and financial forecasting and control processes.
- Understanding of the Electricity Transmission System, transmission assets, and the regulatory environment, including RIIO mechanisms.
- Working knowledge of business processes, governance frameworks, and the practical application of CDM, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage time, cost, risk, and safety effectively.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and business-writing skills, with a stakeholder-focused approach to delivering high-quality outcomes.
- Recognised project management qualification (e.g. APM, PRINCE2) and experience in project development.
