Development Engineer

We’re looking for a passionate Development Engineer to join out Asset Operation team! You will lead in the project setup, option selection, development, sanction, tender and contract award of investments. Undertake optioneering and engineering works to ensure optimal cost, fit for purpose and safe delivery solutions are planned and prepared ready for delivery in accordance with NG processes and procedures that deliver the business’ regulatory, stakeholder and customer commitments.

 

This role is Peripatetic, and we encourage a hybrid working approach, although we’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

What You'll Do

  • Appoint and lead the scheme team during pre-construction phases, actively managing key stakeholders to ensure their timely input and agreement to the selection and development of investments, pursuant to timely approvals.
  • Develop the least cost, optimal, efficient and safe solution in line with CDM Regulations and SHESQ considerations. Document all residual design issues, CDM issues, hazards and risks.
  • Undertake the required site and condition assessments, and support type registration, cost estimation, tendering, contract award, programme & project risk mitigation and innovation activities to enable the delivery vehicle to implement the agreed solution on site.
  • Assess the need for Front End Engineering Design (FEED) or ECI support and where required, appoint and lead the FEED or ECI Contractor in their activities. Monitor and control the FEED or ECI budget and resolve any contractual issues in a timely manner.
  • Support the Investment Engineer to monitor and control portfolio of investments throughout the pre-construction phases and provide competent, accurate and timely financial forecasting information to support regulatory reporting, and business and capital planning.
  • Support the tendering process of projects entering delivery, to provide expertise and lead in the production of competent NEC Site and Works Information, and other procurement documentation where relevant.
  • Enact the role of Client's Delegated Representative and where appropriate, Principal Designer under CDM Regulations.
  • Ensure that core data for the pre-construction phases for their portfolio of investments is maintained to the highest levels of quality and accuracy.
  • Take on board lessons learnt from completed and in-flight investments, including lessons from analysis of compensation events into early investment phases so that the engineered solutions deliver the essential scope at optimal cost.
  • Ensure that resource requests are submitted for portfolio of projects in a timely manner to enable optimised plan build.

What You'll Have

  • Degree or equivalent in engineering discipline, or relevant experience.
  • Proficient knowledge in Contract Management and demonstrated Commercial acumen.
  • Demonstrable understanding of National Grid’s financial forecasting and control processes.
  • Proficient understanding and demonstrable working knowledge of key business processes and governance.
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge of the Electricity Transmission System and the transmission assets.
  • Understanding of RIIO mechanisms and the way that National Grid delivers revenue under the regulatory framework.
  • Proficient knowledge of the application of CDM, Safety and Environmental Regulations.
  • Proficient project management skills including management of time, cost, safety and risk.
  • A stakeholder-centric approach to delivering a high-quality output.
  • Proficient understanding and demonstrable working knowledge of business processes and governance.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrable experience of stakeholder management.
  • Proficient business writing and communication skills.

What You'll Get

Up to £60,000 dependent on experience.

 

As well as your base salary, you will receive a job requirement car, a market supplement of £4500, receive a bonus based on personal and company performance with on target discretionary bonus and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
