Construction SHES & Compliance Manager
We’re looking for a passionate Construction SHES & Compliance Manager to join our Operational Readiness - Property Projects Team!
You provide the highest level of Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) management expertise to the Property Projects Team, including specialist support in system safety, construction safety and CDM compliance. You lead on statutory compliance across the team, ensuring adherence to all internal policies, procedures and external legislative requirements relating to Safety, Health, Security and Environmental management.
This role is peripatetic, and we encourage a hybrid working approach, although we’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!
What You'll Do
- Provide strategic leadership on all Safety, Health, Security and Environmental (SHES) matters, driving a positive safety culture and ensuring procedural compliance across the portfolio.
- Lead Construction Design and Management (CDM) activities and ensure statutory compliance for substations, including environmental management, asbestos controls and regulatory requirements.
- Act as the key interface for operational compliance, ensuring procedural changes are effectively communicated, implemented and embedded across all teams.
- Manage safety and environmental incident investigations, ensuring robust root cause analysis, timely corrective actions and effective sharing of lessons learned.
- Deliver and oversee assurance programmes, including audits, first and second line assurance activities, trend analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide expert SHES advice, guidance and interpretation of safety rules, supporting both local and national safety improvement programmes.
- Lead stakeholder engagement with internal teams, government agencies, local resilience forums and training academies, strengthening emergency preparedness, capability development and compliance performance.
- Support new team members in identifying SHES training and development opportunities
- Line management responsibility for the SHES Support team
What You'll Have
- Minimum HNC or equivalent in a STEM discipline preferably electrical engineering
- Experience in leading a dispersed multi-disciplined team.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
- Driving license.
- Strong commercial understanding and the ability to drive down unit costs through analysis of performance data and by continuous improvement.
- Understanding of the cost of SHES controls and cost benefit analysis of implementing controls.
- Knowledge and understanding of the technical issues involved in working in construction, preferably with a working knowledge/Experience of working in a substation environment
- Knowledge and understanding of National Grids statutory compliance documents affecting its operations.
- Expert knowledge of NG Safety Rules, National Safety Instructions and Working Procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of statutory legislation relating to SHE issues.
- Able to interrogate performance data and drive continuous improvement.
- Effective people management and communication skills.
- Undertake people management in a delivery environment across a full range of staff.

What You'll Get
£61,416 - £66,758 dependent on experience.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance, Job Requirement Car and competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
