Condition Monitoring Technician - Overhead Lines
We’re looking for a passionate Condition Monitoring Technician – Overhead Lines to join our Asset Operations Team!
You’ll take a leading role in assessing the condition of c.4,500 miles of the overhead line and 22,000 transmission towers that make up the high voltage electricity network in England and Wales. Utilising a number of Condition Monitoring techniques to gather data, analyse degradation trends and apply engineering principles to provide the business with decision-making insights that enable one of the UK’s most critical pieces of infrastructure to be maintained, as we drive towards the UK’s net-zero targets.
As a subject matter expert in OHL Condition Monitoring, you will play a leading role in the analysis and management of critical condition data as part of NGET’s annual condition assessment and maintenance programme. You will assess critical overhead line components for defects and to provide the business with critical insights that will inform future maintenance and rectification strategies. You will assist in the management of the broad range of National Grid’s OHL Condition Monitoring processes and will undertake data gathering activities that utilise the deployment of advanced Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) / Drone Operations to inspect NGET’s OHL assets.
This role is peripatetic, and we encourage a hybrid working approach, although we’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!
What You'll Do
- Data Analysis: Lead the analysis of OHL condition data to support the business’ decision-making process and future maintenance strategies.
- Defect Management: Report and manage defects in accordance with our internal processes and identify and address complex defects, collaborating with the OHL CM Team to ensure rectification measures are put in place.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Provide interface between the Condition Monitoring Team and our primary customers and service providers (including the Helicopter Unit, third-party service providers and Asset Lifecycle) and attend meetings to support as part of training and development and/or the presenting of condition assessment insights; ensuring effective stakeholder management, communication and technical support is provided.
- Quality Assurance: Contribute to the quality assurance and continuous improvement of Condition Monitoring data and processes.
- Business Development: Collaborate with the Condition Monitoring team to develop, communicate, monitor, and continuously improve processes and support the creation of Condition Monitoring training programmes, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the team and wider business.
- Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) / Drone Operations: Assist in the deployment and operation of Condition Monitoring Technologies across Overhead Lines and Substations, including the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Undertake UAS GVC training and qualification and National Grid-specific UAS training as required.
- Knowledge Sharing and Reporting: Use developed IT and communication skills to share knowledge, provide insights, and support the continuous improvement of internal software and procedures.
What You'll Have
- A keen eye for detail, with an interest in data analysis and problem solving
- Essential: GNVQ Level 3 and/or relevant experience.
- Experience using Microsoft 365 applications, including Word and Excel
- Strong organisational skills for managing data, applications, and files.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Full UK driving licence.

What You'll Get
Up to £45,865 dependent on experience.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
