Job Purpose
The Reliability Compliance & Policy (RC&P) team helps protect the integrity of National Grid’s operations by providing leadership, governance, and oversight of the company’s NERC compliance framework. RC&P connects regulatory policy, standards development, compliance readiness, ongoing compliance, risk management, and regulatory assurance to help the business anticipate change, manage compliance risk, and maintain a strong and sustainable compliance posture.
The Senior Program Manager, NERC Standards Development & Compliance Readiness owns the bridge between development of a reliability requirement and National Grid's ability to sustainably comply with that requirement. The value of the position is to influence the requirement early, understand its business impact, prepare the organization for it, and ensure a controlled transition into ongoing compliance.
The role is responsible for leading National Grid's engagement in the development, evaluation, interpretation, and implementation of new and revised North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards and applicable Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) requirements.
The role provides end-to-end leadership across the standards lifecycle, from emerging reliability and security issues and early standards development through formal commenting and balloting, applicability and gap assessment, compliance readiness, implementation, and transition to ongoing compliance.
Working with the affected functions across the organization, the Senior Program Manager translates evolving regulatory requirements into clear business impacts, coordinates subject matter expert engagement, identifies implementation risks, and drives the actions necessary to achieve timely and sustainable compliance.
The position also represents National Grid in industry forums and coordinates company positions on proposed standards, helping ensure National Grid has an effective voice in the development of reliability standards and requirements affecting the Bulk Electric System.
Key Accountabilities
- Standards Development: Monitor and assess new and revised NERC Reliability Standards, NPCC requirements, reliability guidelines, and related initiatives. Coordinate National Grid SME review, comments, positions, and voting recommendations to help shape requirements before they are finalized.
- Compliance Readiness & Implementation: Lead end-to-end readiness for new and revised Reliability Standards, including applicability and gap assessments, requirement interpretation, implementation planning, action tracking, development of procedures and controls, readiness sign-off, and transition to ongoing compliance.
- Regulatory Interpretation & Risk: Evaluate requirements for applicability, implementation impacts, compliance risks, and potential business implications, documenting conclusions and escalating significant issues to appropriate stakeholders and leadership.
- Stakeholder & SME Leadership: Lead cross-functional engagement with technical SMEs, compliance teams, and business leaders to ensure requirements are understood, responsibilities are clear, implementation challenges are resolved, and the organization is prepared to achieve sustainable compliance.
- Industry Engagement: Represent and coordinate National Grid participation in NERC, NPCC, EEI, NATF, and other relevant industry forums to remain informed of emerging reliability issues, influence standards development, and bring industry perspectives and leading practices back to National Grid.
- Governance & Program Management: Maintain oversight of the standards-development and compliance-readiness portfolio, including regulatory milestones, effective dates, implementation activities, risks, dependencies, and leadership reporting, while continually improving the governance framework, processes, tools, and controls supporting the program.
- Compliance Assurance & Audit Support: Provide subject matter expertise for regulatory audits and reviews involving newly implemented standards, support regulatory inquiries and Requests for Information, and incorporate lessons learned from implementations and audits into future standards and readiness activities.
