Job Purpose

 

The Lead Supervisor oversees union Designers and Drafting Technicians within the Gas Distribution Design Engineering department. This role supports the design and engineering teams to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and applicable regulations.

 

The Lead Supervisor provides day-to-day leadership, develops team capability, drives process improvements (e.g., design standardization and file management), and partners with internal stakeholders to deliver high-quality designs and work packages.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

 

  • Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day work of Designers and Drafting Technicians within Gas Distribution Design Engineering.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices and compliance with company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Set performance expectations, conduct evaluations, and provide coaching and feedback.
  • Identify training needs and support development to strengthen technical and process knowledge.
  • Review and approve designs and work packages (and provide additional technical review as needed) to ensure they meet specifications and project requirements.
  • Partner with Customer Connections, Gas Field Operations, Construction, Maps & Records, and other stakeholders to support end-to-end project execution.
  • Monitor workload and timelines, adjusting priorities and resources as needed to meet commitments.
  • Maintain accurate records of design activities, approvals, and project status.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts, including standardization, workflow optimization, and document/file management improvements.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering program.
  • 5+ years of gas utility experience, particularly with experience in natural gas transmission, distribution, and pressure regulation design.
  • Understanding of industry codes/standards and applicable design standards.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, integrity, and compliance.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the UNY jurisdiction as needed.

 

Preferred

 

  • Experience with SAP, Bluebeam, Maximo, and MicroStation.
  • Proven experience leading teams, including performance management and coaching.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.

Upstate NY Salary: $111,000 - $130,000 a year
